Tomorrow, June 19, Pasadena City College will observe Juneteenth, and all campuses will be closed.

Juneteenth marks the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans and stands as a powerful reminder of the ongoing pursuit of freedom, equity, and justice. As we honor this important day in our nation's history, we encourage our community to take time to reflect on its significance and the work that continues to build a more just and inclusive future.

We wish our Lancer community a meaningful Juneteenth, and we'll see our students back on campus Monday, June 22, for the start of PCC's Summer Intersession. ❤️💛

Tomorrow, Team PCC will join United Way of Greater Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium for WalkUnitedLA 2026 in support of higher education and student success.

Ahead of tomorrow’s event, CBS LA highlighted the story of PCC student Ducien Allen, who shared his journey through homelessness, displacement following the Eaton Fire, and the support he received from PCC during some of the most difficult moments of his life.

We are incredibly proud of Ducien, who will be speaking at tomorrow’s event to share his story and the impact that support systems like PCC and United Way can have on students working toward a better future.

United Way of Greater Los Angeles continues to be a valued partner in PCC’s Skills to Rebuild Initiative, helping provide critical resources and financial support for our students and community.

Thank you to United Way and the Los Angeles Rams for shining a light on stories like Ducien’s and for supporting students across our region. 💛

Last Friday, PCC welcomed Governor Gavin Newsom to campus during Apprenticeship Week!

The Governor toured our Welding, FabLab, Industrial Fabrication, Building Inspection, and new Construction Trades Lab, programs preparing students for high-demand careers in the skilled trades and supporting recovery efforts following the Eaton Fire. 🔧🏗️

Supported partly by the LA Rises initiative, our new Construction Trades Lab is an outdoors, hands-on training facility that connects students directly to workforce pathways.

We are proud to continue investing in programs that empower students, strengthen our workforce, and help rebuild our community!

Michael Harriot is a columnist, commentator, and author of 'Black AF History: The Unwhitewashed Story of America'. He is a frequent contributor to The Washington Post, The Atlantic, BET, MSNBC, and CNN, and a recipient of the National Association of Black Journalists award for digital commentary.

Don’t forget, Pasadena City College will be closed on Monday, January 19th in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

As we honor Dr. King’s legacy, we reflect on his call to justice, service, and collective responsibility. His words and actions continue to challenge us to stand with our communities and work toward equity and dignity for all.

On Tuesday, January 20th at noon, we invite the campus community to attend ‘Dr. King’s Legacy in Action: Justice, Advocacy and Collective Responsibility’. This panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Fanon Wilkins, will explore Dr. King’s lasting impact and the ongoing work of social justice in today’s world. Panelists include Dr. Keith Williams, Professor Ariana Flores, Dr. Amy Tahani-Bidmeshki, Professor Francesca Chaboya, and Dr. Cristina Salazar-Romo. Light refreshments will be provided.

We encourage our community to take time to reflect, honor, and engage as we continue the work Dr. King inspired. We hope to see you there!
