Can artificial intelligence help make renewable energy more reliable?

Rutgers School of Engineering researcher Aziz Ezzat is exploring how data science, energy forecasting, drones, and artificial intelligence-based analytics can improve the performance of renewable-energy systems.

His work examines practical challenges such as predicting energy production, identifying potential equipment issues, and supporting long-term grid stability. The goal is not simply to collect more data, but to turn that data into better operational decisions.

These are the kinds of complex, data-driven challenges industrial and systems engineers are prepared to address.

How would you design a safer, more connected campus?

Rutgers students recently applied fifth-generation wireless connectivity, the Internet of Things, cameras, and real-time alerts to explore new approaches to campus safety.

Their project was developed for the Verizon Smart Campus Competition, where interdisciplinary teams were challenged to create practical solutions for connected-campus environments. The experience required more than a technical concept—it required students to consider users, infrastructure, communication, and how multiple systems would work together.

That systems-level perspective is central to solving complex engineering problems.

Your walk could reveal changes in your health. And this shoe can track them without a battery. 👟

Biomedical engineering Assistant Professor Simiao Niu and doctoral student Fuyin D**g, have developed a smart shoe prototype that uses AI to analyze how a person walks with 95.4% accuracy. Changes in gait can offer clues about disease progression, fall risk, and recovery. One day, technology like this could help monitor people with Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and other movement disorders.

The most unexpected part? The shoe powers itself using energy generated by your footsteps. No battery. No charging. Just walk, and the shoe generates the energy it needs to analyze your movement.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re learning engineering en español 💡We partnered with Rutgers Society of Hispanic Engineers, to learn engineering terms in Spanish.

Founded in 1984 by seven Hispanic engineering students, SHE was created to build a community where Hispanic engineering students could connect and address cultural concerns within the field. In 1988, the organization became a recognized chapter of SHPE.

Today, SHE continues to foster community and support Hispanic students pursuing engineering, mathematics, and science at Rutgers.
