We could not be more thrilled to congratulation professor Sandra Weiss, PhD, RN, FAAN, recepient of the 2026 Ada Sue Hinshaw Nurse Scholar Award from the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research (FNINR).

This preeminent award recognizes a senior scientist for their substantive and sustained program of science. Weiss' groundbreaking research has profoundly influenced advances in disease prevention and health promotion for very young children and pregnant women. She has contributed to over 540 publications and as a skilled educator, administrator, and mentor, created opportunities for countless emerging nurse scientists to thrive.

“There’s always an opportunity to improve things in health systems,” said Adam Cooper, DNP ’23, RN, NPD-BC, director of nursing continuous improvement and nursing research at UCSF Health.

“Academic-practice partnerships are intended to lift up both the school and the health care organization,” he said. “And there are so many amazing opportunities to do that within the UCSF community.”

From avoiding mistakes with dangerous medications to preventing painful pressure injuries, the scholarly projects addressed by learners in the inaugural cohort of our BSN Entry to the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) pathway are helping clinicians at UCSF Health, and around the Bay Area, tackle some of their most complex problems.

Next week marks 35 years since the Oakland firestorm killed 25 people as it torched 1,520 acres just across the Bay from UCSF.

In January 2025, alum Fernando Fierro, DNP '26, MPH, RN, was on the front lines when the similarly devastating and deadly Eaton Fire broke out in Southern California.

Reflecting on his experiences a year later, he shared his insights on what he learned that could help nurses in disaster areas in the future.

When a UCSF Health nurse has an idea to improve patient care, they have a path to back their instincts with rigorous science. Armed with a Clinical Nursing Research grant and paired with a School of Nursing faculty member, they can conduct a study to generate evidence for improved nursing practice.
