Brown Bag Series in the Humanities Presents: Katie Dowse
(Theater and Dance)

Costume and Otherworldly Worlds

Wednesday, October 28
11:45 am -12:50 pm
Learning Commons 129

Theatre and Dance Professor Katie Dowse discusses the pedagogy developed in her course ‘THTR 152: Myth, Fantasy, and Fashion: Designing Otherworldly Worlds’. The course approaches costume design as an interdisciplinary interface between fantasy, technology, contemporary global conditions, and visual storytelling. The material explores costume as an agent of world-building across theatre, film, and television, reflecting systems of power, technological conditions, and cultural values. The course examines how visual design communicates identity, hierarchy, environment, and ideology, and how costume shapes relationships between body, space, material, and audience.

Rap or Rapta?: Music and Dissent in Urban India

🗓️Friday October 23, 2026
⏰4 - 7 pm
📍LC129, Learning Commons

Join our CAH faculty fellow, Supurna Dasgupta (English) for a screening of the celebrated Bollywood film, Gully Boy. At this movie screening we will witness how joyful music-making forms communities of dissent and solidarity in India. As we watch this film, we will think about how new forms of popular music can dissent against social inequality and injustice. What kinds of new men and women are shaped through these communities? Which global artistic networks do they align themselves with and how?

How to Lose Friends and Alienate Allies: Forging and Unraveling the Canada-U.S. Relationship

Wednesday, October 14, 2026
11:45 am -12:50 pm
Learning Commons 129

Since their founding era, Americans have periodically tried to convince their northern neighbors to join the Union, sometimes by force. This talk will offer a sweeping survey of the prospect (or threat) of the American annexation of Canada. It will highlight major turning points in a relationship long touted as a model for peaceful coexistence between neighbors. Extending the focus through the ongoing trade war, it will examine how Canadian politicians and opinion-makers have long harnessed fears of annexation for political purposes.
