Meet Amy Chen ’27, our URECA Researcher of the Month! 👋

An information systems major in the WISE honors program with a minor in environmental studies, Amy found a way to bridge her two passions through research. Under the mentorship of Professor Guanyu Huang, her work began with establishing an ozone bioindicator garden and collecting leaf samples across sensitive plant species. She then developed an AI computer vision system using convolutional neural networks to detect pollution damage in plants.

Her research has taken her across the country, earning her a best student poster award at the 106th American Meteorological Society Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas, and an invitation to give an oral presentation in Boulder, Colorado. Outside the lab, Amy serves as secretary of the Stony Brook Sailing Club and recently held an environmental engineering position with the Department of Environmental Conservation.

Stony Brook University’s patented quantum technology has made the TIME’s Best Inventions of 2026 list!

Qunnect’s Qu-MEM, the world’s first commercial room-temperature quantum memory, is based on Stony Brook-patented technology developed in the Quantum Information Technology Laboratory led by Endowed Presidential Professor Eden Figueroa.

Co-founded by Stony Brook alumni Mehdi Namazi, PhD ’18, and Mael Flament, MS ’19, alongside Professor Figueroa, Qunnect is advancing quantum networking with technology that stores quantum information without extreme cryogenic cooling.

Stony Brook University Ecology and Evolution Professors Robert Thacker and Elizabeth Watson were awarded more than $270K by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation to lead key environmental research across Long Island.

Their projects focus on early detection of aquatic invasive plants, forest health monitoring and testing native water lilies to protect local freshwater habitats.

The funding supports hands-on research for both graduate and undergraduate students, including a project conducted in collaboration with the Shinnecock Nation.
