Edgar Allan Poe lived steps from Rose Hill in his final years. 🐦‍⬛

The world-renowned writer, poet, and literary critic arrived in spring 1846. He lived in a small rural cottage just a short walk from what is now Fordham University in the New York City borough of the Bronx.

Poe found solace on campus and formed an unlikely bond with the university’s young Jesuit community. He left Fordham in June 1849, a few months before his own mysterious death in Baltimore. The cottage still stands, and the stories about what Poe did there and on campus have been circulating at Rose Hill ever since.

Some of them are backed up by Poe’s own letters. Some are the stuff of campus lore and late-night storytelling. And some, like whether the Fordham University Church bell inspired one of his most famous poems, are still up for debate among scholars.

What an incredible 10th annual Women’s Summit!

A heartfelt thank you to the 150+ attendees who gathered to connect, celebrate, and grow together at our Fordham Lincoln Center campus last week. Nick Martinez, former Ram and Tampa Bay Rays All-Star, is headed to the World Series! ⚾️

He'll become the first former Ram to start a World Series opener since Hank Borowy ’40 in 1945 for the Cubs.

Fordham Magazine caught up with Martinez to discuss his outstanding season and experience at Fordham. Martinez after a recent visit to Rose Hill:

“For me, it’s just like going back home. I was able to go back earlier this year, as well, when we played the Yankees. And so any chance I get to go back and either just walk around or get on the field and toss a little bit, it’s always nice to do that.”

From grab-and-go snacks to the bodega owner’s cat, Maroon Mart had everything you’d find in a neighborhood corner store. But the real highlight? The secret password. 🗝️ Attendees who knew it unlocked access to exclusive Fordham merch in the speakeasy-style hidden store behind the counter.

The Bronx Green Jobs Center Receives $2.5 Million in New Grants!

The Bronx Green Jobs Center, launched last year by Fordham in partnership with community organizations, has received $2.5 million in new capital funding from Con Edison and the office of Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson. The grants will support the transformation of the former industrial space on East Fordham Road into a community hub for green workforce training and entrepreneurship.

October baseball is officially here!

Last week marked our 8th annual Fordham Night at Yankee Stadium, where over 1,100 alumni, friends, and family gathered to celebrate Ram pride. The energy in the stands was matched by a very special guest: former Fordham baseball star and 15-win MLB All-Star Nick Martinez!

Coming off a standout performance pitching the first game of the series doubleheader for the Rays, Nick stopped by campus at Rose Hill before spending time mingling with alumni and President Tania Tetlow during the pregame reception. Even while competing on the big league stage, Nick noted how meaningful it was to step into the crowd, connect with the Fordham community, and reflect on the lifelong friendships he built during his time at Rose Hill.

Thank you to the 1,100+ Rams who showed up in full force to make the night such a success. Here's to community, tradition, and October baseball!

Fordham's Center on Religion and Culture hosted an unforgettable night for students.

Ahead of opening night, Andrew Garfield and James Martin SJ joined the students for a screening and talkback of “The Uprising.”

The two worked together previously while Andrew prepared for his role as a Jesuit priest in Martin Scorsese's film “Silence”.

“I confess to you that I feel really at home here,” said Cardinal Parolin, the second-highest official in the Vatican after Pope Leo, recalling his Fordham visit in 2024.

We were deeply honored to welcome His Eminence Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, back to Rose Hill for his second visit to Fordham. During his visit ahead of meetings at the United Nations, Cardinal Parolin met with President Tania Tetlow, University leaders, faculty, and students, even making a special stop to visit retired Jesuits at Murray-Weigel Hall.

Their discussions touched on pressingly relevant global topics, including the potential impacts of artificial intelligence on higher education, a theme President Tetlow reinforced ahead of our upcoming Ignatian AI conference.

Cardinal Parolin reminded us of the enduring necessity of a Jesuit education: equipping future leaders to tackle humanity’s deepest questions, pursue truth, and put their gifts at the service of others especially the most vulnerable.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to His Eminence and Archbishop Christophe-Zakhia El-Kassis, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the UN, for strengthening the strong bonds between Fordham and the Vatican.
