Flinders NT

Flinders NT Flinders Rural and Remote Health NT is part of Flinders University. Students are taught by Flinders lecturers alongside St John Ambulance NT staff.

We have campuses in Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek, Alice Springs and Nhulunbuy in the Northern Territory, Australia. Flinders in the NT encompasses the School of Medicine and Public Health's activities in the Northern Territory of Australia including the NT Medical Program, Paramedicine and Poche Centre of Indigenous Health. We are recognised internationally for rural and remote health service

and workforce development. Through the NT Medical Program, students can access medical training opportunities across the Northern Territory. Students can undertake the full four year graduate entry Flinders University Doctor of Medicine (MD) in the NT, or a six year undergraduate entry double degree in collaboration with Charles Darwin University (Bachelor of Clinical Sciences/Doctor of Medicine). The Northern Territory Medical Program has sites in Darwin, Alice Springs, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Nhulunbuy. Beginning in 2021, the Bachelor of Paramedic Science NT offers residents of the Territory the opportunity to study this degree without having to relocate interstate. The Centre for Remote Health offers a broad range of educational activities for health professionals working in rural and remote regions of Australia. They have established a research program which seeks to be responsive to community and health service needs, with an emphasis on collaborative effort and capacity building. The vision of Poche SA+NT is to contribute to the improved health outcomes of Aboriginal people in remote communities of the Northern Territory and Australia, through conducting high quality research, education, and training. The Centre achieves this vision in partnership with Aboriginal communities. The Centre builds on Flinders University’s existing strengths and works to increase the number of Indigenous students studying medicine, nursing and other health profession courses, further develop the skills of the non-Indigenous health workforce, lead research into Indigenous health related behaviour, and improve training in cross-cultural communication skills.

A special shout out to Dr Felix Ho ASM OAM was awarded a 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award for his service to community health and humanitarian leadership through lifelong volunteering and medical practice, aiming to improve outcomes across local, national and international communities πŸ‘

Dr Felix Ho is also a NT Medical Program graduate from one of the first cohorts in Darwin. His favorite memory? β€œThere was only 24 of us, so we got to know each other really, really well. There was a Flinders-style, or unwritten expectation so to speak, that the year above would help the current year’s class and vice versa, basically the idea was that you pay it forward. I very much enjoyed that community aspect.”

πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ Supporting the next generation of allied health professionals!

This week, Leigh Moore and Melba Ridd from Flinders University University Department of Rural Health partnered with Indigenous Allied Health Australia National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Academy in Darwin to deliver an educational escape room experience for Year 11 students πŸ”

Working with IAHA staff Jess, Charlie and Jordie, four teams of students tackled clues to help a β€œpatient” from a remote community access the care he needed in a culturally responsive way. Congratulations to Team Kirk, who successfully "escaped" in just 37 minutes! πŸŽ‰

As the event coincided with Speech Pathology Week, the Year 12 students joined us as we explored the role of speech pathologists in supporting communication and swallowing, with delicious treats from Parap Bakery, generously provided by Speech Pathology Australia🧁
