Students from Saint Mary’s University (SMU) School of Accountancy and Business (SAB) secured two of the five major awards at the KINAYA 7.0 Social Entrepreneurship Development Program’s Business Pitching Competition held on October 21, 2026, at the Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU) Mini Theater in Bayombong.

Leading SMU’s wins, AniWorth earned Best Overall Business Plan for its proposed social enterprise that transforms eligible surplus vegetables into marketable snacks, including tomato and cabbage chips. The team comprises King Ranier C. Ambeguia (BSE 4), Anasha Charmelotte V. Cinense (BSBA-MM 4), Julliana C. Panaligan (BSE 3), Daniella Evelyne E. Tolentino (BSBA-FM 2), and Maria Atasha Dorain Reyes (BSBA-MM 3). The team was coached by Mrs. Claire L. Guinomon and Mr. Roy B. Lumidao.

Meanwhile, DALAW won Most Innovative Product for its reusable cloth sanitary pads, which promote affordable and sustainable menstrual care while providing livelihood opportunities for women and menstrual health education for young girls. Its members are Khatarina Jane R. Castillo (BSBA-MM 3), Giorgia Trish C. Castillo (BSBA-MM 4), Josea Glorien T. Castillo (BSBA-FM 2), Ma. Anne Lorraine S. Corpuz (BSE 4), and Allia Jadyn A. The other awards recognized enterprises from partner institutions. Patulud of PLT College Inc. received Best Social Impact for its local tricycle-hailing application, while Vizora of NVSU–Bayombong won Best Environmental Impact for its three-in-one, bio-based crop protection product made from orange, ginger, and marigold. Katmona, also from NVSU–Bayombong, received Best Economic Potential for its katmon fruit-based food products.

The three-day KINAYA 7.0 culminating activities, held from October 20 to 22, were organized by PeopleDev International Corp. (PIC), Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU), and the Production and Operations Management Association of the Philippines (PROMAP). Anchored on the theme “Empowering Communities through Innovation and Sustainable Enterprise,” the program brought together students, educators, and industry practitioners to promote innovation, social entrepreneurship, and sustainable community development.

The recognition highlights the Marians’ efforts to develop business concepts that address community needs while creating economic, social, and environmental value.

Tuguegarao City, Cagayan — Saint Mary’s University (SMU) reaffirmed its commitment to regional academic excellence and sustainable development as faculty representative Mr. John Michael C. Ibarra participated in the 2nd Provincial Statistics Committee (PSC) Summit on October 20, 2026, at the Crown Hotel Pavilion.

Organized by the Regional Statistics Committee of Region II, the summit gathered key leaders, government agencies, and higher education institutions to advance data-driven growth. Aligned with the 37th National Statistics Month theme, "Tuklas Pilipinas: Statistics as Beacon Towards Inclusive, Resilient, and Sustainable Tourism," the event highlighted how quality statistics empower community-level tourism development.

A key highlight of the afternoon sessions featured Mr. Ibarra actively contributing during the open forum. Drawing from SMU’s expertise in hospitality and tourism management, Mr. Ibarra shared insights on leveraging smart tourism tools to strengthen destination safety and enhance visitor security across the region. His contributions emphasized how technology and data-backed strategies can safeguard travelers while building resilient communities.

The summit featured lectures on data-driven local planning, MSME development, eco-friendly regional circuits, and smart tourism initiatives presented by representatives from the PSA, DOT, DTI, DEPDev, and DOST.

Through active participation in regional multi-sectoral dialogues, SMU continues to drive progress aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals—specifically SDG 8 (Decent Work&Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation,&Infrastructure), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption&Production)—paving the way for a smarter, more sustainable Cagayan Valley.

Saint Mary’s University and the Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) Department family are brimming with pride as Dr. Janne Nilen Lacuata-Calip, a Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management (BSTM) Class of 2018 alumna, achieves a historic milestone—becoming a licensed Physician.

During her time at SMU, Dr. Calip, was the definition of an active, responsible, and academically gifted student. An Entrance Scholar, Dean’s Lister, and half-tuition academic scholar for three semesters, she constantly pushed her limits—earning 2nd Runner-Up in the Luntian 2015 Literary Quiz and competing in the Search for Statistics Wizard 2014. She also led with passion as Vice President for Finance of the Marian Association for Tourism Students (MATS) S.Y. 2017–2018 and as a member of the League of Tourism Students in the Philippines (LTSP) Baguio Chapter, eventually graduating Cum Laude in June 2018.

Driven by a passion to serve others on a deeper level, she bridged the gap between service management and medical science. She earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from Pines City Colleges in Baguio City in June 2025, followed by a rigorous 1-year postgraduate medical internship at Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center (BGHMC). Today, she officially holds her license to heal.

Her journey proves that a degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management is a versatile foundation for any professional dream—shattering boundaries and demonstrating that HTM can be an excellent stepping stone to medicine, law, or any advanced field.
Her extraordinary career shift directly advances UN Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being, proving how human-centered service and empathy from tourism management seamlessly translate into compassionate, quality healthcare.
Her journey reflects the HTM tagline—Inspire, Innovate, and Influence—and exemplifies SMU’s mantra: Inspired by Mission, Driven by Excellence.

Congratulations, Dr. Janne Nilen Lacuata-Calip! The entire SMU-HTM family celebrates your inspiring success.
