On May 7, 2026, The University of Akron’s Office of Academic Affairs hosted the inaugural “First to Finish Celebration,” recognizing students who achieved the remarkable milestone of being the first in their families to earn a bachelor’s degree or higher 🎓🦘

The celebration acknowledged individual achievements marked by resilience and determination while highlighting the shared support of families, faculty, and staff who encouraged students throughout their journeys. Graduates received the signature First-Gen Zip stole in commemoration of the success in their journey 🌟

We had an absolute BLAST last Friday May 1st, where we held our Senior Celebration with all of our wonderful graduates- it was a day full of reflection, community, recognition, and joy! 😊💙🎉

This past academic year, we’ve had the honor of hosting a countless amount programs, initiatives and events with the help of all of our wonderful Zips! 🦘

This past academic year, we had the honor of launching and beginning to host a new program called the Blue & Gold Leadership Series! 🎉 Working with our Choose Ohio First scholars, this program focuses on workplace leadership and preparing for success! 🏆

Partnering with Leadership Akron and the Center for Immersive Leadership, the Blue & Gold Leadership Series gives our students:
1. Direct engagement with regional STEM leaders! 🧬
2. Fostered mentorship and job pathways, more specifically, with targeted coaching to strengthen workplace competencies, communication, and professional identity! 🗣️📈

Working with this program next academic year, we can’t wait to continue to help our Choose Ohio First Scholars build the skills and qualities needed for success! 💙🦘
