While their opportunities span the globe, many Retrievers choose to remain local and use their talents to support enterprises across Maryland. From the iconic Dominos Sugar Factory to the pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca, these 2026 interns made lasting contributions to the Old Line State.

UMBC undergrad students Noah Reichardt and Morgan Robbins spent this summer in Hawai‘i at one of the world’s top astronomy institutes, studying supermassive black holes and colliding galaxies, hiking volcanos, building their scientific networks, and refining their career goals.

🎉 Please join us in celebrating the generosity of Akshay Java, M.S. ’03, Ph.D. ’08, computer science, and the Java-Rijhwani family, who recently established the COEIT Computing for Social Good Award, to be given annually to one or more students in the College of Engineering and Information Technology (COEIT) who have conducted substantial research with the goal of harnessing technology to make positive social change.

Eight UMBC students spent part of their summer meeting business leaders, visiting Maryland companies, and getting a closer look at careers that connect the state to the rest of the world.

They were selected for the World Trade Center Institute’s (WTCI) 2026 Albrecht Fellowship, a two-week professional development program hosted in Baltimore City and focused on international business and global affairs. This year, the UMBC group set a record.

As fall 2026’s first few days are underway, Retrievers across campus—newly minted and returning—are finding their place. In addition to learning to navigate to the right classroom, they are bringing their unique strengths and voices to this ever evolving community.

President Valerie Sheares Ashby addressed the new students at Convocation, reassuring them that UMBC is where they’re meant to be.

“…I want to make sure you hear this from me: You belong here. You have come to an institution that wants you here and believes that you can be successful here, even if you are not yet completely sure of that yourself.”

Four CNMS students completed recent internships at Maryland-based companies and agencies show how local opportunities are helping Retrievers build skills, find mentors, and advance discoveries that matter here and beyond.

Junior biological sciences major Magdalen Ruth at the National Institute of Health said, “I’ve just found myself in a great spot with UMBC. I feel really blessed to have had all the opportunities I’ve had. Being able to do these internships has seriously been great.”

On a typical day this summer, you may have started the morning stirring sugar into your coffee. After checking the weather forecast or making a few calls on your cell phone, you may have then logged into secure networks to access work data or conduct financial transactions.
