On Tuesday, October 27, Harvard Medical School Master of Medical Sciences in Global Health Delivery (MMSc-GHD) students attended the Integration Science Symposium hosted by the Center for Integration Science in Global Health Equity based at Mass General Brigham Hospital. The speakers and panels covered information on different aspects of Integration Science in practice.

Students had the opportunity to hear the speakers and to connect with them in person. The Symposium was an excellent learning and networking opportunity. We are so lucky that Harvard Medical School and Harvard University host many opportunities like these for students!

At the end of the Symposium, the event organizers had several musicians who were involved in advocacy around diabetes perform for the audience. The music was a wonderful addition to the event!

Today we remember Paul Farmer, MD, PhD, who would have been 67 years old on 10/26/26. Paul was a physician, an anthropologist, a prolific writer and an advocate for improving the lives of the poor. In 2012, Paul founded the Harvard Medical School Master of Medical Sciences in Global Health Delivery program along with Joia Mukherjee and other faculty at the Harvard Medical School Department of Global Health and Social Medicine. Paul also co-founded the NGO Partners in Health. See the comments for a link to the video we made in tribute to Paul in 2022.

A special thanks to Caroline Mae Ramirez, MD, MMSc '22, who arranged the video clips for this project, to Joia Mukherjee who wrote the script. Christina Thompson Lively wrote the song "Mountains Beyond Mountains." The title references a Haitian proverb: "Beyond mountains, there are more mountains." "Mountains Beyond Mountains" is also the title of a book about Paul's life. Thank you to Partners in Health and Harvard Medical School for the video clips.

Susana Orrego Villegas, MD MMSc ‘23 gave a great talk on Thursday, September 17, on climate change and universal health care with a focus on Latin America. Students enjoyed learning more about this topic and meeting Susana. Susana encouraged students to work hard on their studies and also to make the most of their time in Boston, MA during the program. Susana definitely did this - she both produced excellent academic work and made time to attend concerts and events and made lots of friends in the area. She stayed after the talk to speak to students individually, and so we could get a group photo of Susana and some of the students who joined the talk.

Thank you, Susana, for planning a stop in Boston during your trip to the US and for giving the talk! We are lucky to have such talented and committed alumni in our program!

In this talk, Dr. Orrego Villegas will explore how a changing planet is creating new challenges for health systems. Today, health systems are not only responding to infectious and non-communicable diseases, but also to increasingly unpredictable weather, environmental degradation, pressure on natural resources, and other planetary changes that directly and indirectly affect population health and the capacity of health systems to respond.

Dr. Orrego Villegas is a physician whose work sits at the intersection of value-based care models, epidemiology, data, risk management, global health, and planetary health. She is currently a full professor at EAFIT University, where she teaches about health quality and global health, with a focus on Latin American health systems and their main challenges. She is especially interested in how the climate crisis, inequalities, and social changes are redefining health risks.

Dr. Orrego Villegas graduated from the HMS Master of Medical Sciences in Global Health Delivery program in 2023.

This talk is organized by the Harvard Medical School Master of Medical Sciences in Global Health delivery program

Dawnn Pauline Bituin, MD, MMSc ‘26 had her thesis “‘Why Can’t She Just Leave?’: Pathways of Liberation from Intimate Partner Violence, a Mixed Methods Study in Mabinay, Negros Oriental, Philippines” featured in the August 2026 Mass General Brigham OB-GYN Global newsletter.

For this thesis, Dawnn and her research team used a mixed-methods approach to explore women’s multifaceted pathways to liberation from intimate partner violence (IPV) including psychosocial, physical, and legal separation. They examined how sociodemographic and partner characteristics, forms of abuse, and support systems influence women’s journeys toward freedom, complemented by in-depth interviews capturing their lived experiences and perspectives.
