Meet Plant Wizard, a student-built farm that tends itself.

Five Wentworth students from three schools teamed up on a capstone that started with a data science question: can you measure how healthy a plant really is? Their answer is a refrigerator-sized vertical farm with a robotic gantry, hydroponics, sensors, and an app that works like a video game.

Plant a seed pod, top off the water once a month, and the system handles the rest.

Sam Kidd, the first graduate of Wentworth’s Physics program, spent his summer working with data from the 2024 total solar eclipse. Through a Research Experience for Undergraduates with the University of Colorado Boulder, he built a way to align eclipse images even though the moon hides the Sun in every frame, helping researchers study the Sun’s corona.

Next up, he’ll present his work at the American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco.

Congratulations to Dean of Students Jenn Kosses, who has been named to the NASPA Foundation’s 2027 class of Pillars of the Profession! The national honor recognizes leaders whose service, scholarship, and mentorship have made a lasting difference in student affairs and higher education.

Over nearly 20 years at Wentworth, Jenn has helped shape the student experience from Orientation to Commencement, including planning for the First-Year Tower and the growth of our CARE team.

The issue features our Construction Management Club, an interview with BSA Executive Director Danyson Tavares, BArch ‘11, MArch ‘12, Architecture student Aiden Belisle on his co-op at CI Design, and a look inside Studio 6, where third-year students designed a food production and cultural facility for Craic Sauce Works in Lowell.

Wentworth students spent two days in Watson Auditorium meeting employers at our Fall Co-op Recruiting Days. Wednesday focused on Engineering & IT, and today is The Built Environment Day. Companies are hiring for Spring and Summer 2027 co-ops.

Last week, tunnel boring officially began on the Hudson Tunnel Project, the first new rail tunnel under the Hudson River in more than a century. Our Construction Management Club got an early look.

This summer, CM Club students toured the site and watched one of the project's massive tunnel boring machines being assembled on the New Jersey side. Each one weighs more than 1,680 tons, with a cutterhead nearly 29 feet across.

Thank you to John Dalton of STV for hosting, and to Matt Poirier '92, senior vice president at Keville Enterprises and a Wentworth CM adjunct professor, for making the connection.

October is Careers in Construction Month, and this is what it looks like at Wentworth: students on site at one of the most important infrastructure projects in the country.
