When conflict feels impossible, how do we find common ground?

On October 1, 2026, renowned negotiation and conflict resolution expert Daniel L. Shapiro, Ph.D., will join Dean Nancy Coleman at Sanders Theatre for the Dean’s Distinguished Lecture.

Dr. Shapiro is the founder and director of the Harvard International Negotiation Program, an associate professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School/McLean Hospital, and affiliated faculty with the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School. Drawing on his extensive work in negotiation, psychology, and global conflict resolution, he will explore how we can overcome the emotional and identity-based forces that divide us.

Tickets are $10, and livestream registration is also available. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the program begins at 6:30 p.m. The first 100 guests in line will receive a signed copy of Negotiating the Nonnegotiable. A meet-and-greet with Dr. Shapiro will follow the lecture.

Earning a Harvard degree while working full time—and studying in a second language—showed Sarah Kneisle, ALM ’26, what she was truly capable of.

Through the Industrial-Organizational Psychology Master’s Degree Program at Harvard Extension School, Sarah transformed her interest in the human side of organizations into a concrete career path in people, culture, and organizational development.

“Other people’s doubts don’t define what’s possible. It’s proof to myself that I can commit to something demanding over several years and see it through at a high level.”

From late-night assignments in Germany to graduation in Harvard Yard, Sarah’s journey is a powerful testament to the value of consistency, resilience, and believing that you belong.

How can fiction help us process the uncertainty and isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic?

Harvard Extension School instructor and academic advisor Leah De Forest spoke with the Harvard Gazette about her upcoming debut novel, Any Kind of Known Tomorrow. Set during the early days of the pandemic, the novel follows four women sharing a New York City apartment as they navigate uncertainty, family relationships, and the different ways people respond to crisis.

“The books I love the most show me something that I recognize in the world and maybe haven’t fully articulated for myself yet,” De Forest shares.
