Business and Entrepreneurship Department - CCC

Business and Entrepreneurship Department - CCC It is our goal to empower students to become successful leaders in the arts and creative industries. Business and Entrepreneurship students learn by doing.

We prepare students to be entrepreneurial leaders in the following careers: music promotion, distribution and executive production, international arts management, live entertainment and the performing arts, TV, film, radio, print, marketing, digital and social media, museums and galleries, professional and collegiate sports. They make connections with an active network of 3,000 alumni working for

top arts and entertainment companies located in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and around the world. Columbia’s location in the heart of Chicago provides students with opportunities to intern and work for world-renowned companies while simultaneously earning their degrees.

Student Spotlight: Elijah Mercado, Marketing student with a focus in Advertising. ⭐

What’s your role at Auris, and what’s rewarding about your work as a graphic designer?

Auris is a live event company for electronic dance music; they own multiple music venues, including Smoking Mirrors, Pyrsm, Outset, Radius, Concord Music Hall, and the Patio. We also have the ARC Music Festival in Chicago every Labor Day weekend in Union Park.

I am a graphic designer for every venue and live event umbrella at the company. I do everything from designing posters, merch, motion graphics, and logo design.

I have learned a lot about how to function within a brand identity. There are different brand guidelines for the ARC festival and the venues, so I get to turn different parts of my brain on and off every day, depending on what brand I am working with.

Last year at ARC, it was my first time having a merch design of mine to get approved and sold at the festival. Which was huge for me, as the festival continues to grow bigger every year.

How did you get introduced to your role at Auris?

My brother had a connection with Columbia Alumni and the senior designer at Auris. I had started posting some personal graphic design work on my social media, when he saw my work and sent me a DM saying Auris was looking for a full-time junior graphic designer. I expressed that I was in school and was interested in being a part-time graphic designer, if they were willing to work with my schedule. I have been working there for two years now.

What are your plans after graduation?

Once I graduate, I will be working full-time at Auris, and later in the future, there is a chance to move up to a creative director position. I would love to win a Grammy for record packaging. I really love working in music, so I would love to do that or continue down the merch designer route.
