Friday, October 30th! Explore the Interpretive Trails with EIC Naturalists, after dark! We'll walk the trails, observe the evening wildlife (perhaps even something a little spooky!), and then relax around a campfire to wrap up the evening! All ages are welcome. Join us next Wednesday in the EIC auditorium from 5-6:30 pm for an instructional conversation with Jeffrey R. Boutain, Ph.D. He will share some of his tricks and gardening tips on how he has grown 1,170 lb giant pumpkin and a 183 pound giant butternut squash. Then stick around for a social event and harvest tasting of Michigan-grown pumpkins, plus pumpkin puree refreshments. This event is free and open to the public.

This weekend, EIC staff were invited to visit Greenfield Village, where Indigenous artist Jamie John has activated the Village Print Shop for their Artist in Residence program! We met Jamie last winter, when they created an incredible mural titled "From Acorn to Oak" in Room 119 of the EIC, as part of UM-Dearborn's Inclusive History Project. Check it out next time you visit, or in the photos below! Can you recognize any animals on it that frequent the Interpretive Trails?

It was a joy to pay a visit, and it was fascinating to see Jamie at work block printing, a very different artistic process from painting a mural! At The Village, Jamie is doing a limited edition of 37 prints, inspired by stories of the people and the land. A 37-print edition was chosen as a nod to 1837, the year Michigan was admitted into the Union!

Greenfield Village is decorated for the Halloween season, and the cool, misty weather really added to the spooky atmosphere! Thanks so much for having us!

Way to go! It's exciting to see so much local progress on bird collision prevention!

After noticing and tracking bird strikes on the law library windows on campus, we partnered with Wayne State University to install bird-safe windows. What a terrific partnership! Friday was a beautiful afternoon for a trip to visit our friends at WildType Native Plants! We picked up a handful of Paper Birch (Betula papyrifera) trees to plant along the Interpretive Trails. This planting was sponsored by a generous donor! Thank you!

Check this workshop out if you get the chance! Spotted Lanternflies are starting to show up in our area in numbers, and YOU can help track the spread too!

Community science platforms like iNaturalist.org empower folks to collect meaningful data that land managers can use to inform their habitat management efforts.

Did you know? Spotted Lanternflies were first detected in the US in Pennsylvania in 2014 👀 As populations continue to grow here in Michigan, we can learn a lot from areas on the east coast that have been experiencing large numbers for a while now. Removal of SLFs is still encouraged, but nature is also starting to respond!

Community scientists and researchers are noticing that several native species are beginning to recognize them as food ~ this includes bats, spiders, birds and even green frogs! I’ve spotted a few SLFs, both nymphs and adults, caught in webs—like this one on Belle Isle over the weekend 🕸️ As conservationists continue to make informed decisions about management, YOUR observations can make a difference! There is still so much we don’t know! Get involved by submitting your photos to Midwest Invasive Species Information Network (MISIN) or on iNaturalist.org.
