This fall, the University of California, Irvine School of Law’s Graduate Tax Program launched the UC Irvine Tax Advocacy Clinic — the program’s second clinical initiative and a significant step forward in its commitment to innovative experiential education. The clinic expands access to legal assistance in federal and California tax matters, with a focus on underserved and underrepresented communities. The clinic will serve as a resource for attorneys, legal aid organizations, and other clinics looking to connect clients with tax assistance.
Open to both Tax LL.M. and J.D. students, the Tax Advocacy Clinic will handle a broad range of federal and California tax matters, including audits, collection actions, administrative proceedings, and litigation before the U.S. Tax Court or the California Office of Tax Appeals. The clinic will also provide tax consulting and advisory services to individuals and businesses.
The Tax Advocacy Clinic will be directed by Robert Russell, UC Irvine Law Lecturer and practicing attorney. Under Russell’s supervision, students will take primary responsibility for their cases, including interviewing and counseling clients, conducting legal research and analysis, drafting legal documents, communicating with tax agencies, and advocating in administrative proceedings.
