🌎 Big news for climate research in California!

A $38.2 million investment from the State of California will establish a new multicampus UC research institute dedicated to tackling climate change. Announced this week by California Assemblymembers Cottie Petrie-Norris and Jackie Irwin, the initiative will bring together researchers from across the UC system, including UC Irvine experts in wildfires, coastal issues, urban flooding, desert ecosystems and more. Together, they're advancing research and science-driven solutions to some of the most pressing challenges of our time and helping build a more sustainable future for all Californians.

UC Irvine is putting Orange County community voices at the center of conversations about women’s wellness. The annual Women’s Health Summit is part of the university’s larger effort to improve the health of women. Some of the questions they are asking include: Where are women struggling to find information or care? Which health concerns are getting too little attention? Who is being missed altogether? And are researchers asking the questions that matter most to the people they hope to help?

UC Irvine's philosophy is guided by these principles: Put science, clinical care, advocacy and lived experience at the same table, then give everyone a chance to talk.

🎙️On the UCI Podcast, Andres Bustamante takes us on a tour of the “playful learning landscapes” his research team has helped bring to schools and community spaces across Santa Ana and explains how they’re already making a difference.

The idea is simple: Turn everyday spaces where families gather into opportunities for learning through play. Bustamante and his team at the STEM Learning Lab are creating interactive spaces in parks, playgrounds, grocery stores, and even bus stops that help children build science, technology, engineering and math skills beyond the classroom.

Congratulations to Earth system scientist Henri Drake, named a 2026 Packard Fellow for Science and Engineering by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation

Drake will use the nearly $1 million in fellowship funding to develop new ways of predicting coastal flooding, bridging fields that are usually studied separately.

“Some of the most important questions in climate science fall in the gaps between disciplines,” he said. “The Packard Fellowship lets us follow the full chain of cause and effect, from a collapsing glacier in Antarctica to a flooded street in Newport Beach.”

🎶 From the UC Irvine campus to stages across Southern California, Mariachi Orgullo de UCI is building community through music.

Founded in 2024 by Brendaitzel Torres, the student group has grown into a 15-member ensemble sharing traditional Mexican music while creating a living connection to culture and heritage. 🇲🇽💙💛

And online, they’re finding an even bigger audience — bringing the sounds and spirit of mariachi to listeners well beyond campus. 🎺🎻

To date, they've performed at the Irvine Barclay Theatre, Segerstrom Center for the Arts, Downtown Santa Ana ArtWalk and community gatherings throughout the region.

Sabalyn Castillo, a second-year mathematics major, has embraced the opportunity to connect with her culture and community through music:

“Being part of the group has made me more confident and connected to my culture and has truly made my college life amazing. During my first year, I struggled to make friends – despite me living in the dorms and having smaller classes. My bandmates have provided me with a lot of guidance with my classes, internships, or with advice about the process of just becoming an adult.”
