Established in 1983, the Northeast Regional Climate Center (NRCC) is located in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Cornell University.

https://www.nrcc.cornell.edu/ It serves the 12-state region that includes: Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and West Virginia. Major funding is provided through a contract with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The Center's staff works cooperatively with the National Climatic Data Center, the National Weather Service, state climate offices, and other interested scientists in the Northeast to acquire and disseminate accurate, up-to-date climate data and information.

This first half of October ranked among the 20 warmest such periods on record for 20 of the Northeast’s major sites. Precipitation amounts ranged from less than 25% of normal to over 200% of normal, with seven major sites having one of their 20 wettest starts to October. See our website for more details.

Conditions deteriorated in northern areas of the region, while recent rain allowed some improvement in southern areas. Severe drought expanded in Maine; moderate drought expanded in Vermont and was introduced in central New York; abnormally dry conditions expanded in areas across New York and in southern Vermont. Moderate drought and abnormally dry conditions improved in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, as well as in small areas of southcentral Pennsylvania, eastern West Virginia, and western Maryland.

Connecticut has a new state record!

Connecticut broke weather history this year on July 4! ⛈️

Talk about a Fourth of July fireworks show from the sky! 💥 A massive 3.5-inch hailstone collected in Terryville, CT, has officially been confirmed as the new Connecticut state record for hail diameter!

Exceeding the state's previous known maximum hail size of 2.75 inches, this historic stone fell during a severe Independence Day thunderstorm and was just formally verified by the State Climate Extremes Committee, including U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) representatives.

New England saw the most changes this week, with conditions deteriorating in northern Maine and northern New Hampshire due to lack of precipitation, low streamflows, and record-low groundwater. Maine now has 41% of the state in severe drought. Recent rains allowed moderate drought to be reduced in southern New Hampshire and southern Maryland.

This September was record wet for Islip, NY, and among the 20 wettest for an additional 10 major sites. However, Caribou, ME, had its fifth-driest September. Temperatures were cooler than normal in New England but warmer than normal for much of the rest of the Northeast.

Conditions continued to improve in the Mid-Atlantic, New York’s Long Island, and southern New England this week. New Jersey became free of drought for the first time since August 2025. Massachusetts and West Virginia reached their lowest coverage of drought since August 2025, while Maryland reached its lowest coverage of drought since October 2025. However, abnormal dryness expanded in Vermont and parts of western, central, and northern New York.
