Northeast Regional Climate Center

Northeast Regional Climate Center Established in 1983, the Northeast Regional Climate Center (NRCC) is located in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Cornell University.

It serves the 12-state region that includes: Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and West Virginia. Major funding is provided through a contract with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The Center's staff works cooperatively with the National Climatic Data Center, the National Weather Serv

ice, state climate offices, and other interested scientists in the Northeast to acquire and disseminate accurate, up-to-date climate data and information.

While some interior and northern areas saw beneficial precipitation and improving conditions, some areas closer to the coast from Maryland to Massachusetts saw reduced precipitation and worsening conditions. Deterioration included the expansion of extreme drought on the Delmarva Peninsula and increasing coverage of severe and moderate drought in southeastern New York and southern New England.

A warm, dry week allowed drought conditions to expand in areas closer to the coast from Maryland to Massachusetts. Extreme drought was introduced in southern and eastern Maryland, southern Delaware, and southeastern New Jersey. As of June 9, 43.78% of Delaware was in extreme drought, its highest such coverage since August 13, 2002.

Improvements continued this week at the far ends of the Northeast region – West Virginia and northern New England. Extreme drought was removed from West Virginia, while severe and moderate drought were reduced in that state plus central New Hampshire and western/southern Maine.

Much-needed rainfall arrived in the Mid-Atlantic, chipping away at drought and abnormal dryness in several areas. Extreme drought was mostly removed from West Virginia, while severe drought was erased from portions of West Virginia, Maryland, southern Pennsylvania, and northern Delaware.
