Belhaven University remembers with love and gratitude Helen Sloop Martin, a beloved alumna, teacher, mentor, and faithful servant of Christ. Mrs. Martin went to be with her Lord and Savior early this morning.

A 1961 Belhaven graduate, Mrs. Martin returned to her alma mater in 1991 after more than two decades of missionary service in Brazil. She taught in Biblical Studies and served in Residence Life, where her compassion and genuine love for students made a lasting difference. Her ministry was marked by a deep desire to share God’s Word and encourage young men and women to live out their faith in their churches, communities, and vocations.
Helen also shared a remarkable ministry of service alongside her late husband, Dr. Joe Martin, who was himself a beloved member of the Belhaven faculty. Together, Helen and Joe poured their lives into students and into the mission of Christian higher education. Their shared commitment to teaching, missions, and ministry left an enduring mark on the Belhaven community family.
In recognition of her faithful service to the Church and to others, she received Belhaven’s Church Service Award in 1999. In 2011, she was honored as a member of Belhaven’s Legacy of Learning, in recognition of her 20 years of teaching and service to the University.

We give thanks for Helen Martin’s life, her faithful witness, and the countless lives she touched through her love for Christ and Belhaven. Her legacy of faith, teaching, and compassionate service—shared so faithfully with Dr. Joe Martin—will continue to live on in the lives of those they served.

Rep. David L. Moran, Class of 1974, is our 2026 World Service Award recipient! Sensing a call to pastoral ministry during his time at Belhaven, David has spent more than 45 years serving multicultural and bilingual churches in the United States while training church leaders internationally.

His ministry has included 20 years serving in inner-city Houston and 20 years pastoring in Key Biscayne, Florida, where he helped develop English, Spanish, and Portuguese-speaking congregations. He also founded CITA-EDU, Inc., an online Master’s in Divinity program offered free to thousands of students across Spanish-speaking countries.

A young man who came to Belhaven sensing God’s call to ministry has spent the better part of his life equipping other men and women to carry the same Gospel into communities around the world.

The World Service Award honors an alumnus of distinct Christian character who impacts the broken world through service to Christ and others by serving the oppressed, advocating equality and justice, or offering faith-based humanitarian relief.

Bernice “Boney” Sietman, Class of 1966, is our 2026 Community Service Award recipient! A graduate in Elementary Education, Bernice has spent decades serving others through education, church ministry, and community outreach.

For the past 17 years, Bernice has been involved in jail and prison ministry, including leading a Christ-centered recovery ministry at Ohio’s women penitentiary and teaching Bible studies to incarcerated women. She has also ministered to women overcoming addiction, served in nursing homes and homeless shelters, and taught children through Child Evangelism Fellowship.

Boney’s heart is focused on the Lord and finding ways to be His hands and feet. Boney, thank you for showing us what a lifetime of faithful, ordinary obedience can accomplish for the Kingdom.

The Community Service Award is presented to an alumnus whose mature understanding of the Christian faith has been instrumental in their commitment to build their local community.
