The incentive package for Mesabi Metallics' proposed Lee County steel plant will cost about $777,000 per job created, making it one of the priciest efforts at job creation in Iowa history. In a recent Des Moines Register piece, Professor Nichola Lowe explained why tax breaks for Mesabi are not as effective as direct investment in a community, pointing to alternatives such as more public funding to prepare the workforce. We're excited to announce Léocadia Tchouaffé as our Alumni Day keynote speaker! ⭐

Léocadia is a human rights fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center. She earned her Master of Human Rights at the Humphrey School, where she was a Barbara Frey Fellow. Her work supports engagement with the United Nations and other international bodies, raises awareness of human rights standards and helps coordinate civil society coalitions in the Deep South and beyond.

In a new opinion piece for The Hill, Professor Lawrence R. Jacobs examines how changes in party nominations and the expansion of presidential power have reshaped American politics.
