Happy Commencement week, Class of 2026! We look forward to celebrating each of you this weekend!

Friday, May 15 - join your JD and MSPL classmates at the Graduation Reception from 3:00 - 5:00 pm in Mondale Hall. This event is open to faculty, staff, graduates, and their guests (RSVP requested).

Saturday, May 16 - Minnesota Law will host our 138th Commencement Exercises at 10:00 am (US Central Time) at Northrop on East Bank. Tickets are free and required for any guests attending in person. It will be livestreamed for guests who cannot join in person starting promptly at 10:00 am (US CT) on law.umn.edu/commencement.

Maria Jorge Sales-Pós LL.M. ’26 is the LL.M. Class of 2026 speaker for Minnesota Law's 138th Commencement Exercises at Northrop on May 16.

A graduate of law school in Brazil, Maria Jorge Sales-Pós holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais and is a licensed member of the Brazilian Bar Association, bringing an international perspective to her legal education. In Brazil, she practiced property law and later served as a law clerk for a criminal court judge.

At the University of Minnesota Law School, she served as a research assistant to the Honorable LaJune Lange (Ret.) on research related to the Durban Declaration and international human rights. She also served as the LL.M. representative on the Student Philanthropy Board, helping promote philanthropy and designing and managing a fundraising campaign.

Kara Galvin and Hannah Logan, Director and Assistant Director of International Programs, traveled around Asia earlier this month to reconnect with LL.M. and JD alumni, and meet future Minnesota Law students. Kara Galvin stopped in Taipei, Shanghai, and Seoul, while Hannah Logan visited Shanghai, Xian, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou. Thank you to all of our colleagues at law schools across the region, and our wonderful alumni in each city, for making this an excellent trip!

Director Kara Galvin and Assistant Director Hannah Logan had an incredible time in Taipei, Shanghai, Xian, Seoul, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou recently! Thank you to our alumni in each city for coordinating visits, translating meetings, and joining us for delicious dinners. The presentations to future Minnesota Law students and meetings with potential partner law schools were wonderful.

Our colleagues are doing amazing work all over the world.

A delegation from the University of Minnesota Law School’s University of Minnesota Human Rights Center and James H. Binger Center for New Americans is in Geneva, Switzerland, from March 2–6 to participate in the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

The delegation includes (pictured L to R): Dr. Calla Brown of the University of Minnesota Medical School; Jessica Klander, president of the Hennepin County Bar Association; Amanda Lyons ’09, executive director of the Human Rights Center at the University of Minnesota Law School; Sarah Brenes, executive director of the James H. Binger Center for New Americans; Abby Nelson of the Human Rights Center; and (not pictured) University of Minnesota Law School students Trinity Fritz Lawrence ’26 and Yessenia Gutierrez ’26.

The Human Rights Center is coordinating this effort alongside The Advocates for Human Rights. Delegation members will present research, analysis, and first-hand accounts of the federal enforcement operations in Minnesota across areas of expertise, including legal protections for refugees, asylum-seekers, and other migrants; democracy and the independence of lawyers and judges; and impacts on education, food, housing, and health.
