Last week, Assistant Director of International Programs Hannah Logan attended the EducationUSA Brasil LL.M. fairs in Brasília and São Paulo. She also gave a brief presentation to associates at Veirano Advogados and attended a networking event at the Pinheiro Neto law firm. It was wonderful to meet with future University of Minnesota Law School students!

Hometown: Suzdal, Russia
Undergrad: University Grenoble Alpes, France

Why did you choose Minnesota Law? I obtained my law degree in France in 2005 and spent over 18 years as in-house legal counsel in corporate and investment banks in Europe and the Middle East. We moved to Minnesota in 2024, and I was looking for the best way to leverage my international experience and pursue my legal and governance career in the U.S. The LL.M.

at the University of Minnesota seemed like a great opportunity to become familiar with common law generally and American law more specifically. I have been impressed by the quality of teaching and the great range of courses!

What are you looking forward to this year? I am very excited to now experience legal studies through a practical lens and bring some of my professional experience into classroom discussions. Also, teaching in the U.S. is quite different from everything I have come across so far, and I am very motivated to get the most out of my LL.M. year. I am also looking forward to learning from my colleagues about their legal systems and backgrounds.

What are your professional plans? After my LL.M. year, I am planning to take the New York Bar Exam and pursue my legal career, whether in the U.S. or elsewhere.

Who inspires you? My kids have been a great source of inspiration! I admire the way they evolve through different cultures and systems, switch from one language to another, and get the best out of each experience. They have been an amazing source of support in my decision to obtain another law degree, and in turn, I hope that my story will inspire them in their own life
choices.

What’s a recent book or podcast you’ve read or listened to? I am a huge podcast lover and always listen to podcasts in the car. I enjoy a French podcast, New Deal, and found it very helpful in trying to understand and decode U.S. politics and election culture.

Do you have other hobbies or interests? I enjoy spending time with my spouse and kids. We love hiking and biking — and in Minnesota with its stunning lakes, state parks, and trails, it is an amazing place for it. I am an active member of the French community in the Twin Cities, and since last year, have been a board member of a French immersion school, Notre École.

Why did you choose Minnesota Law? I like the courses offered here, the international student body, and the school’s proximity to my home. I particularly chose Minnesota Law because of the prompt communication I received from the team in the International and Graduate Programs.

What are you looking forward to this year? My time here has been awesome so far. I’m looking forward to my favorite American holiday, Thanksgiving. Not only do I love the delicious food, but I love the attitude of gratitude that is featured.

What are your professional plans? Since I come from the “Gold Coast” of Africa with extraction companies everywhere, I am hoping to serve in a corporation that has a conscience for the environment and people impacted by its activities.

Who inspires you? My all-time favorite is Nelson Mandela. He taught me to forgive and to never give up hope, even through the hardest times. On a personal level, my greatest inspiration is my 2-year-old son — the unconditional love that he shows gives me the strength to keep going.

What’s a recent book or podcast you’ve read or listened to? I recently read Pardon Power: How the Pardon System Works — and Why by Kim Wehle, which discusses the potential abuse of pardons. I also enjoy listening to podcasts: The Chris Voss Show and the BBC Focus on Africa.

Do you have other hobbies or interests? In my spare time I do reading, gardening, crafts, trying new foods, experiencing new cultures, and traveling. I also volunteer my time with people with special needs — I have found this very fulfilling.

Last week was a wonderful first week with our LL.M. and fall semester exchange students! This year's Introduction to American Law course is underway and we have an amazing group learning all about the US legal system, navigating the University of Minnesota Law School, and trying some local delicacies (cheese curds). It's going to be an excellent year with this cohort.

Our LL.M. graduates go on to do amazing things - including earning their JD degree at Minnesota Law, too! Congratulations, Min Soo!

Experience working at a charter school led Min Soo Son ’26, LL.M. ’22, from corporate law to immigration defense. As Son got to know his students and their families in St. Paul’s Midway neighborhood — many of whom were Karen refugees — he kept encountering the same problem. Their immigration status was unstable, and legal help was out of reach.

“I felt I could truly understand what they were going through,” he says. “At some point, I realized I had a strong feeling inside me that I wanted to practice immigration law in Minnesota.”

Son registered as a pro bono attorney, began taking cases at the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota (ILCM), and applied to transfer to the University of Minnesota Law School’s J.D. program. When Son learned about the Law School’s Saeks Public Interest Residency Program, in which students work full-time during their 3L year for a nonprofit or government agency and have a guaranteed, full-time, paid legal position with the same organization the year following graduation, he didn’t hesitate to apply.

Now a 3L J.D. student, Son works on ILCM’s community defense team, handling detained removal proceedings.

“I focus on the case and people in front of me, and in a chaotic world, I’m thankful that I can be a part of the small role helping families through difficult moments,” Son says. “My colleagues and I hear painful stories. Each story is really challenging, but it also becomes a strong motivation to continue this work.”
