Birds of LSU New Orleans! Sharing the beauty of birds on the LSU New Orleans campus. Funded by the U.S.

Fish and Wildlife Service's, Urban Bird Treaty Program, via the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation—Five Star and Urban Waters Restoration Program, our grant, “Urban Bird Habitat and Environmental Education at the University of New Orleans” was established to create an urban birding trail at the University of New Orleans (UNO); initiate regular campus bird counts; plant 120 native trees and shrubs along the trail route; launch UNO participation in trash cleanup events; and provide hands-on, expert-led environmental educational experiences to UNO TRiO Upward Bound students. These efforts will enhance bird habitat along a key migration corridor running through one of the nation’s most deforested cities; expand community tree canopy; improve public open spaces; avert waste from local waterways and improve awareness of the impacts of litter; and engage the community (especially its underserved youths) in nature appreciation, environmental protection, habitat restoration, and citizen science.

Red-breasted Nuthatch

They're back!
Our campus has been a winter host to these acrobatic little birds over the years. You can see them moving up/down along tree branches probing the bark. Zoom into the beak and note the chisel like shape. They will use the beak to manipulate nuts, wedge them into the bark and whack the nut until the seed "hatches" out.

Be alert for their loud nasal "yank" or "eep" call.

We had a gorgeous morning doing a little bit of maintenance in the campus woodlot, removing invasive plants, picking up trash, and redefining the trails.

Thank you to Max NPI Native Plant Initiative of Greater New Orleans who organized the event with us.

Thank you to our staff and students and volunteers who showed up to help! Louisiana Master Naturalists of Greater New Orleans

Shout out to LSU New Orleans Police and Officer Franks who stopped by. We were able to show him the Great Horned Owls that oversaw our work this morning.

If you want a break from the day, take a moment to walk the woodlot and destress!

Great Horned Owls are still in the woodlot. Our group saw both birds on 10-15-2026. If you listen closely, in the video you can see and hear the vocalization.

This video was taken after work on 10-5-2026 at dusk, when owls get more active.

On Tuesday, we were alerted that both the male and female Great Horned Owls were in the same tree in the Liberal Arts courtyard.

I was able to get a photo with both birds. This is the first time we have seen them in the same tree.

Below the tree was an owl pellet, second photo. If you zoom in you can see the bones of the prey that one of the owls ate. The pellets are regurgitated undigestible items (fur/bones/feathers) of the prey.

Very glad that we have an engaged birding network on campus to alert us to the location of birds.

The owls have since been seen back in the woodlot.

Summer Tanager (female)

Notice the hefty beak, larger than that of a Scarlet Tanager which also can be found on campus during migration.

Seen in the pine tree by the Administration Bldg.

Heading to Mexico, South and Central America for the Winter.

9-23-2026 One of our local birders and frequent visitor to campus Jerhemy Lonzo was able to get a video of the campus resident Cooper’s Hawk staking out the bird feeder by the administration bldg. Thanks for sharing!

Trying to capture birds in photos can be daunting! The birds are usually moving or obstructed by twigs, leaves, and dirty glass to name a few.

Certain diagnostic characteristics help in identification.

Seeing double!!
So it is official. There are two Great Horned Owls in the woodlot on campus. We have had visual and audio on a male and female owl!

Thank you for alerting us of the two owls.

Both owls have been vocalizing and performing duet calls at dusk.

We will be checking to see if they nest on campus!

This is the second owl seen.
