From light-based art to extraordinary books and groundbreaking illustration, SVA Galleries welcomes three special exhibitions marking the return to campus for the 2026–27 academic year.

"Brad Holland: Making It Personal" presents a rare survey of the late, influential illustrator whose work shaped the pages of The New York Times, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, and more. Curated by SVA faculty and alumnus Jonathan Twingley (MFA 1998 Illustration as Visual Essay), with advisement from fellow alumnus Stephanie Plunkett (MFA 1990 Illustration as Visual Essay).

MFA Illustration as Visual Essay partners with legendary Italian publisher Corraini Edizioni for a deep dive into bookmaking as art in "Building Books." Plus, an immersive installation inspired by Bruno Munari's classic "The Circus in the Mist."

Curated by Kacie Lees (MFA 2012 Fine Arts), "A Vivid Blur" brings together a dozen artists working in neon, plasma, and immersive installation to explore light as both medium and subject.

🖌️ "Brad Holland: Making It Personal" is on view at the SVA Gramercy Gallery through Saturday, September 19, with an opening reception tonight, September 9, 6:00 - 8:00pm.
📚 "Building Books" is on view at the SVA Flatiron Gallery through Monday, September 28.
✨ "A Vivid Blur" is on view at the SVA Chelsea Gallery through Friday, October 30, with an opening reception on Thursday, September 10, 6:00 - 8:00pm.

"Building Books. Corraini Edizioni: Children, Art, Design, and Everything Else" opens at the SVA Flatiron Gallery tonight 📚✨

Presented by SVA Galleries and the MFA Illustration as Visual Essay program, in partnership with the legendary Italian publisher, this exhibition brings together decades of Corraini's illustrated books—work that has shaped how generations think about children's books, art, and design as a single, continuous idea rather than as separate categories.

📍 SVA Flatiron Gallery, 133/141 West 21st Street
🗓️ On view through Monday, September 28
🎉 Opening reception tonight, 6:00 - 8:00pm
Free and open to the public

A new semester has officially begun at SVA!

After a Welcome Week packed with information sessions, virtual events, facility tours, and social activities, our new undergraduate and graduate students are ready to kick off their journey at the School of Visual Arts. This year's incoming class moved into the residence halls and dove right into campus life with a full slate of fun events organized by SVA Student Engagement and Leadership.

Students also connected with key campus resources, including the International Student Office, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Student Health and Counseling Services, the SVA Library, and Career Development—all part of SVA Student Affairs' effort to help students land on campus feeling informed, supported, and ready to thrive.

Here's to a great semester ahead!

Vibrant artwork by SVA alumni blooms across the New York Botanical Garden.

Sprayground founder and creative director David Ben David (BFA 2005 BFA Design & BFA Advertising, School of Visual Arts; DBD) brings his latest collection to life through a pop-up at NYBG. The 30-piece bag collection is a collaboration between New York Botanical Garden and SPRAYGROUND, and includes pieces like a duffle inspired by the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory’s iconic arched windows. The pop-up runs through Monday, September 7, with the collection available online.

SVA Comics | Illustration faculty member Eugenia Mello (MFA 2017 svamfaillustration) brings her signature bold style to the Garden’s “Flower Power” exhibition—her poster for the show has been adapted into banners, signage, and more across the grounds. The exhibition channels the spirit of the 60’s and the enduring symbolism of flowers as icons of peace and love. Mello’s (Eugenia Mello) work is everywhere in the city right now—she’s also this year’s US Open theme artist. “Flower Power” is on view through Sunday, October 18.
