From L.A. animation studios to the Nile, SVA Destinations programs pair restorative travel with focused artistic study.

Students have gone behind the scenes at animation studios in Los Angeles and visited civil rights landmarks in Alabama. They have also explored the Pyramids of Giza, cruised the Nile, and sketched in the footsteps of van Gogh and Cézanne in Provence.

Twenty years after graduating from SVA, Tom Bongiorno (BFA 2006 Graphic Design) has collaborated with the SVA Campus Store on a collection of four hats in 10 colorways.

Tom founded Bongiorno Brand in 2015, and the company makes fully custom headwear. It also develops products for brands and cultural partners around the world.

How do you paint a feeling that is hard to put into words? For MFA Illustration as Visual Essay student Leona Yang, the answer often lies in symbolism.

In a new interview with VoyageATL, Yang talks about The Fracture, a series in which a cracked egg represents emotional wounds and the slow work of accepting them. She also describes her meditative approach to color: before choosing a hue, she asks, “What color does this object feel like to me?”

This semester, students in SVA's MPS Art Therapy program have partnered with VISIONS/Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired, a New York City organization, to provide short-term art therapy experiences.

The work is part of Special Projects, a distinctive element of the MPS Art Therapy department that gives students additional opportunities to work with clients beyond their internship placements. Each session is co-facilitated by students and a board-certified art therapist.

Through the partnership, students gain hands-on experience creating client-specific directives, fostering community partnerships, and assessing project objectives and results, skills central to clinical practice.

Illustrator and BFA Illustration faculty member Yuko Shimizu (MFA 2003 Illustration as Visual Essay) spoke with Europe Says about illustrating the Folio Society’s new edition of Japanese Ghost Stories, Lafcadio Hearn’s classic collection of Japanese folklore. Shimizu modeled her double-page spreads on the illustrated books of the Edo period, adding modern colors and tones to bridge the 120 years since Hearn’s book first appeared. The page edges carry calligraphy by her close friend Ai Tatebayashi, a fellow student in the MFA Illustration as Visual Essay program in the early 2000s.

Her advice to young artists is to stay true to their own vision: “We need to stop guessing, and keep focusing on us.”
