At last week's commencement ceremonies, the graduates represented campuses in Long Island, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Middletown, and Skokie, Illinois, and disciplines ranging from physician assistant studies and physical therapy to speech-language pathology, counseling, nursing, applied behavior analysis, and many more.

More than 500 students celebrated graduation from Touro University’s New York School of Career and Applied Studies (NYSCAS) last week!

The school’s 52nd annual commencement ceremony was held at the historic Coney Island Amphitheater, where, surrounded by supportive friends, colleagues, mentors, parents, children, and grandchildren, the graduates will now advance their careers equipped with a Touro education to enter the fields of health sciences, education, paralegal studies, nursing, and more.

Professor spotlight! For almost two decades, Professor Tom Rozinski has been a cornerstone of academic life at Touro, where his teaching, mentorship and innovative approach to education have helped shape generations of students. Rozinski is widely respected for his professional accomplishments and the deep, lasting relationships he builds with students.

With an impressive career that includes work as a partner in a law firm and seven years in New York City government, including as Commissioner of Homeless Services, Rozinski says teaching at Touro has been the most fulfilling because of the close relationship he has with his students, now and well past graduation.

Touro University recently announced the launch of a center to study and counter antisemitism in higher education. One of the first initiatives of the Touro University Antisemitism Institute will be a teaching fellowship, to be held this summer, made up of faculty from universities around the country.

Touro professor Rabbi Dr. Mark Goldfeder, who will lead the fellowship, spoke to the Jewish Press about his goals and his thoughts on antisemitism in American academia today.

The key question is not whether the conduct hides behind the veil of political language. As we mentioned, antisemitism almost always borrows the respectable vocabulary of its time. The question is whether Jewish students are being treated equally.

Congrats grads! TouroCOM Harlem graduated its 15th class of Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine at jubilant ceremonies attended by faculty, administration, family and friends last Thursday at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall.

Jelissa Hernandez Lopez, M.S., DO, cm laude, received a scholarship award that recognizes achievements of underrepresented students. Lopez emigrated with her family from Ecuador to North Carolina at eight years and pursued medicine after witnessing her grandmother’s struggles to get care for diabetes. Lopez will be a resident at UNC Southeastern in Emergency Medicine and hopes to open a free clinic for immigrants and people of color in a low-income area.

About TouroCOM, she said, “I wanted to find a medical school that would support those dreams and aspirations. TouroCOM offered a scholarship for underrepresented minorities and told me not only can I be a doctor, but I can also make the path easier for those who come after me. It’s empowering to be given the opportunity to enact positive change.”

Slightly more than half of the class will be entering primary care or other shortage specialties. Among the most popular specialties are anesthesia, neurology, physical medicine & rehabilitation (“PM&R”), diagnostic radiology and urology. Leading academic medical centers receiving TouroCOM students are Tufts Medical Center, Stony Brook Hospital, NYU Grossman, University of Louisville, Brown University, Henry Ford, and George Washington University.
