Special Journal Issue on Religion and Italian Mobilities
Submissions Due: November 1, 2026
The Italian American Review (IAR) invites submissions for a special issue on religion and Italian mobilities. Building on the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute’s April 2026 conference “Religions, Beliefs, and the Supernatural in Italy and Across Italian Mobilities” the IAR seeks articles that address the religious lives and practices of members of the Italian diaspora, current immigrants in Italy and their descendants, and former Italian colonial subjects.
Religious beliefs and practices shaped the ways in which Italian emigrants were seen and understood in new environs, especially in Protestant-dominant countries like the United States. Most recently Muslim and Buddhist immigrants in Italy have had to contend with the dominance of Catholicism in that country’s political and cultural spheres. In addition, Italy’s colonial and imperial projects in Africa and in the Mediterranean racialized religious differences as aspects of warfare and violent subjugation.
The Italian American Review is an interdisciplinary, bi-annual peer-reviewed journal of the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute (Queens College, The City University of New York) that publishes scholarly articles about the history and culture of Italian Americans, as well as other aspects of the Italian diaspora. The journal embraces a wide range of professional concerns and theoretical orientations in the social sciences and in cultural studies.
Authors wishing to have an article manuscript considered for publication should email David Aliano ([email protected]) Rosangela Briscese ([email protected]) by November 1, 2026. For submission guidelines, see our website.
