In conjunction with the Impressions of the Floating World exhibition, the Galleries and Printmaking are pleased to host visiting artist M. Willie Garcia for a three-day visit to the School of Art.

Join us in the Dorothy Uber Bryan Lobby on Thursday, Oct. 22 for a free public lecture where M. will discuss their work, which moves far beyond traditional print media to include screen printing, mokuhanga, projection-mapping, animation, and large-scale installation.

On Friday, Oct. 23, M. will host two rounds of contemporary mokuhanga demonstrations in the Willard Wankelman Gallery. First from 10am-noon, and again from 2-4pm. Join us to learn more about how the traditional Japanese woodblock printing techniques shown in Impressions of the Floating World continue to evolve and inspire artists today! No experience is required to view or participate in the make and take demonstrations.

On Saturday, Oct. 24 (REGISTRATION REQUIRED - LIMITED SPACE), M. will host a full-day mokuhanga workshop in the Printshop (FAC 1211). This is an incredible opportunity to learn traditional techniques employed in a contemporary manner, and to work with water-based colors, a hand-held baren printing tool, and the kento registration system. BGSU Painting/Drawing alumni Jens Svendsen (MFA 2008) and Kolton Sizer (MFA 2022) were invited to participate in the exhibition Memories and Mindscapes: An Exploration of Inner Landscapes in Contemporary Drawing, curated by artist Mark Rospenda. The exhibition was displayed at the Indiana University South Bend Gallery and featured selections of contemporary drawings from across the US. Congratulations to these artists and everyone involved!

Join us to talk about the professional journeys of five alumni from the School of Art who are employed in areas of leadership and Art Education at the Toledo Museum of Art.

Expanding its educational impact, MA's partnerships with the School of Art provide hands-on professional experiences that translate creative studies into viable career pathways in education, curation, and arts administration.

This event will be on Monday, October 19th, at 5:00 pm, at the Donnell Theatre, Wolfe Center for the Arts. We hope to see you there!

Kaileigh Newman, BGSU Art Education BFA 2010, travelled farther than most for her student teaching experience at Aldine ISD in Houston, Texas. She stayed there to begin her career teaching high school art and is still inspiring students in the district through her role as Director of Visual Arts for Aldine ISD and President-Elect of the Texas Art Education Association. Now Kaileigh, the community, and the district are celebrating the groundbreaking of the Educational Performing Arts Center (EdPAC) which was included in a 2023 bond package.
This new facility will serve fine arts students and educators while creating meaningful opportunities to connect with and serve our broader community. In the building will be a main theatre boasting 1,400 seats, a black box theatre, 2 dance studios, 2 ensemble rooms, one enclosed gallery, an open gallery, a conservation room, two art classrooms, and artwork storage.
Kaileigh shared the influence Bowling Green had on her career, saying, “As a BGSU graduate with a BFA in Art Education, it is incredibly meaningful to reflect on how my journey as an art educator has grown since graduation. BGSU played an important role in preparing me for this journey. I am grateful for the foundation I received and excited to share how that learning continues to shape my work and leadership in arts education. Go Falcons!”
We can't wait to see the work students create in this space, congratulations to Kaileigh on her work in the Houston community!

Exhibition Details:
I AM WE celebrates the work of three Black artists who are inspired in different ways by revolutionary ideals, and for whom art making is both a reflection of and a fuel for collective liberation. Where Baba Wayne Curtis and Emory Douglas came to their revolutionary thinking through involvement in the Black Panther Party and activism within their respective communities, Yusuf Lateef follows in their footsteps and expands the possibilities of what liberation, joy, intergenerational teaching, and community building looks like through the lens of an artist.

We are thrilled to celebrate the most recent award for our graphic design division and students after they earned gold in a national design competition. Students spent ten weeks developing, designing, and executing an immersive gallery exhibit, "In the Roots: Ohio's Native Plants", at the Fine Arts Center. The project was one of over 800 entries in the University and Colleges Designers Association competition, and one of only 21 entries to earn gold - placing our students in the top 3% of all submissions.
Jenn Stucker, Graphic Design Chair, said of the experience, “Experiential learning, whether a design internship or like this Collaborative and Community Engagement Practicum, provides students with the momentum to feel confident in the next steps of their career. We highly value providing these teaching and learning opportunities."
Congratulations to the eleven undergrad and graduate students who collaborated to bring this exhibition to life, we can't wait to see what you do next.

Congratulations to recent School of Art grad, Elana Maraldo, on winning an award in her most recent exhibition. "An Artist's Anguish" by Elana won Second Place in Realism for The Paul and Norma Tikkanen Painting Prize through the Ashtabula Arts Center.
Elana graduated in 2026 from Bowling Green with a BFA in Studio Art (focused in painting and drawing) and a minor in marketing. We are so proud to celebrate her most recent award, congratulations again!

BGSU students, save the date for our next visiting artist. The Painting and Drawing area is pleased to host artist Ann Getsinger for a public talk on Tuesday, Oct 13, at 5pm in room 2000.
Ann will be addressing a history of why value and light are such important compositional tools in 2-D works and speak about her own professional practice.
She works in a traditional grisaille method and explores many facets of the natural world in her paintings from Maine and Massachusetts.
The visit will be sponsored through generous contributions by the SOA Ring Fund, the Painting Area and the 2DAA club as well as the Provost's office.

Join us for a traditional Japanese tea ceremony! This event will be on October 9th, from 5-6:30 PM, located in the Hiroko Nakamoto Tea Ceremony Room in the Dorothy Uber Bryan Gallery.

In partnership with the Japanese Program, we invite you to experience a traditional tea ceremony, featuring a live demonstration and an opportunity to taste authentic matcha and sweets.
