What if tiny, lab-grown brain tissues could help researchers better understand the complex factors involved with autism?

That’s the question at the heart of new research led in part by UNT College of Engineering associate professor and biomedical engineer Moo-Yeal Lee. His team is developing a new technique that uses brain organoids to study how genetic factors and environmental exposures may affect early brain development.

The five-year, $1.1 million NIH-funded project could give researchers new tools for studying the biological mechanisms associated with autism, potentially opening the door to applications far beyond this research.
