Every case represents a person, a family and unanswered questions. Now Wayne State students are helping local law enforcement revisit unsolved homicides through the university’s Cold Case Investigations Program. 🔎

Working alongside experienced investigators, they'll analyze records, organize evidence and look for leads that could help bring families closer to answers. Check out how Warriors are putting their criminal justice education into action to serve the community. 🔰

Wayne State University students are using their work in the university’s Cold Case Lab to aid local law enforcement in solving cold cases.

Graduate school is about more than research. 🔬

For Wayne State Ph.D. student Michael Adu, the journey also means mentoring undergraduate researchers, collaborating with fellow scientists and building a community that makes the experience more meaningful! 💚💛

When people think about graduate school, research is the first thing that comes to mind. While research is a major part of my graduate experience, I have learned that graduate school is about much more than the research itself. It is also about mentorship, collaboration, learning from others, and bu...

Congrats to chemistry alumnus Darrell Marshall and the Total Analysis USA team on securing a $1.25 million National Science Foundation (NSF) award! 🎉 His work is helping advance new approaches to pathogen detection in public health and food safety! 🔰

Dr. Darrell Marshall, Founder and CEO of Total Analysis, has been awarded a $1.25 million SBIR Phase II grant from the National Science Foundation. 🏆

Read that number twice. $1.25 million is the ceiling NSF sets for this award. He came in $474 under it. Count his Phase I and he now holds more than $1.5 million in NSF backing, and he still owns every share of his company. Roughly one applicant in twenty ever gets this far.

Detroit raised him. Cooley High graduated him. Wayne State trained him. He earned a PhD in bioanalytical chemistry and came home to build.

In 2021 he lost his grandfather to an infection caught inside a hospital. He turned that loss into technology, a device a little bigger than a textbook that can detect dangerous germs in minutes, with no lab and no waiting., a device the size of a textbook that uses airport-security physics to find dangerous germs in minutes. No lab. No waiting.

Contaminated food hospitalizes 128,000 Americans every year. NSF just funded the early warning, and it is being built in Detroit.

Every Saturday we ask the founders in the room to stand up. This week the whole room stands for Dr. Marshall. 👏🏾

Congratulations, Dr. Darrell Marshall. 🧪

From the classroom to Capitol Hill, students are putting science into action! 🔬🏛️

This summer, members of Science Policy Network–Detroit traveled to Washington, D.C., to meet with congressional offices and advocate for scientific research, public health and evidence-based policymaking.

A powerful opportunity to turn knowledge into advocacy and make their voices heard.

For two days this summer, Wayne State students, faculty and staff took their commitment to science and public health from the classroom to Capitol Hill,

Thanks to a Wayne State University Humanities Center Humanities@Work internship, political science student Bella L***r is making an impact on the Detroit waterfront this summer as a Belle Isle Conservancy intern! Operating “Betty” the BeBot, a beach-cleaning robot, Bella is helping collect microplastics, analyze beach pollution data, and educate the community on litter prevention.

Betty the BeBot returns for the third year on Belle Isle Beach to fight against plastic pollution. A part of the “Keep Belle Isle Beautiful ” campaign from Belle Isle Conservancy and one of the parts of the incentive of the “Great Lakes Plastic Cleanup” as a collaboration between the Council of the Great Lakes Region and U.S. and Pollution Probe in Canada.

This also includes a partnership with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. With the funding of $280,000 from Meijer this year as well. Betty has the ability to cover 32,000 feet per hour on her battery power and pull trash and debris off the beach.

To help volunteer with the Belle Isle Conservancy and Betty, the cleanup dates will be every second Friday of the month from July to September from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Belle Isle Beach. Also, every third Saturday from now to October 17, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Belle Isle Beach as well.
