Finding a virus starts with detecting the tiny traces it leaves behind.

Rice graduate student Seye Oladeji helped improve a tool that recognizes a virus’s genetic material, making it 100 times more sensitive while maintaining stability under harsh testing conditions.

The team tested the tool using synthetic, noninfectious HIV material. With further development, it could also help detect viruses such as flu and COVID-19.

Seye is a biochemistry and cell biology graduate student in Yang Gao's lab at Rice and the first author on this paper.

Planning to apply for a Ph.D. at Rice for Fall 2027? Doctoral Application Fee Waiver Weeks begin Oct. 14.

Eligible domestic and international applicants worldwide can request a waiver through Nov. 1, or until all available waivers have been issued.

To qualify, you must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or the equivalent, and meet Rice’s and your program’s admissions requirements.

Submit your completed application by Nov. 27 at 10:59 p.m. CST to use the waiver. Test scores may arrive later, provided they arrive by your program’s application deadline.

The waiver does not apply to Jones School of Business programs.

A graduate student, a postdoc and a Rice Ph.D. alumnus are helping develop a “living pharmacy.”

Anthony E. Davis, Shalini Pandey and Cody Fell are co-first authors of research on an implant that produces therapeutic antibodies. Working with bioengineering professor Omid Veiseh, the director of Rice Biotechnology Launch Pad, and collaborators, the team demonstrated yearlong production in preclinical models.

The findings offer a potential path toward longer-lasting medicine delivery.
