Research led by the lab of Associate Professor Christopher Halbrook at UC Irvine’s Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences has found that common cholesterol-lowering drugs may offer a promising new approach to tackling chemotherapy-resistant pancreatic cancer.

In collaboration with UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, UC Irvine School of Medicine and other institutions, the team is investigating how statins could help target vulnerabilities in resistant tumors, with the findings informing an ongoing clinical trial at UCI.

How do cells know which genes to turn on? 🧬

A team led by researchers at the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology in Vienna, together with the laboratory of Associate Professor Evgeny Kvon at the UC Irvine Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences, used deep machine learning to design artificial DNA switches that successfully activated genes in specific tissues of living mouse embryos.

The findings could help scientists better understand development and pave the way for more targeted gene therapies.
