We are proud to announce that Dean Kahler (B.S. ’77) has been inducted into the College of Education and Human Services Hall of Fame with the Distinguished Alumni Award!

From surviving the May 4, 1970 shootings at Kent State to serving as an Athens County Commissioner, disabilities advocate, state public servant, and beloved social studies educator, Dean’s entire life is a masterclass in resilience and civic leadership.

Driven by his personal philosophy—"I wake up every day and thank God I am alive and ask how can I make the world better"—Dean’s work has transformed campus accessibility, voting rights, and classrooms across Ohio.

Congratulations to Eliott Arroyo, Ph.D., Assistant Professor in Health and Exercise Science at Wake Forest University, on his induction into the Kent State University College of Education and Human Services (EHS) Hall of Fame!

Receiving the Recent Alumni Award, Arroyo is being recognized for his excellent work in clinical exercise physiology. As a first-generation college student who earned his Ph.D. during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Eliott's journey is a testament to grit, resilience, and passion.

Today, his clinical research bridges athletic strength principles and complex kidney care—helping individuals with chronic kidney disease restore physical function, protect heart health, and maintain their independence.

"We use exercise mostly to improve the quality of life, the longevity, the way these individuals feel, so that even though they have kidney disease, they can still maintain a level of functional independence," said Arroyo.

Join us in celebrating Arroyo for his dedication to research, mentorship, and transforming lives through movement! Read his full story at https://shorturl.at/LivE3. https://www.facebook.com/ej.arroyo.3/

Celebrating 54 Years of Passion, Curiosity, and Teaching Excellence!

We are thrilled to announce that long-time educator and Kent resident Jon Secaur, ('72, Ph.D. '94) is being inducted into the EHS Hall of Fame and receiving the Centennial Alumni Award!

From starting his career at Crestwood High School to shaping young minds for 29 years at Theodore Roosevelt High School, and spending over 40 years inspiring Kent State Golden Flashes in physics, Secaur’s dedication to education is unmatched.

Whether it was pioneering remote physics labs, patenting safety inventions with students, or sharing his favorite course, "Seven Ideas That Shook the Universe," Jon has spent decades helping students see the beauty in science. Even after earning Emeritus status in 2022, his love for teaching brought him right back to the classroom in 2024!

As he likes to say—borrowing from poet Mary Oliver—a teacher’s job is simple: "Pay attention, be astonished, and tell about it."

Please join us in congratulating Jon Secaur on this well-deserved honor! Drop your favorite memory or message of congratulations in the comments below! Read his full story at https://shorturl.at/jFI7l

Honoring Leadership, Compassion, and Legacy! 💙💛

We are thrilled to honor Lee Schwebel with the College of Education, Health and Human Services Distinguished Service Award!

From continuing his family’s 50+ year legacy with Kent State University—starting with the Schwebel Garden Room and the annual Schwebel Lecture Series—to mentoring students through mental health and career challenges, Lee’s commitment to uplifting others comes straight from the heart.

As an alumnus of Emerson College, Lee was deeply moved by the lessons of May 4, 1970. To ensure the human cost of history is never forgotten, he spontaneously stepped forward to sponsor full trips for Boston-based, political communications students to attend Kent State’s annual May 4 commemoration and build cross-campus solidarity.

"Much has been given to me and much has been expected of me," Lee said. "And I hope that my legacy will show that I truly cared and I gave back, and everything came from my heart."

Join us in celebrating Lee Schwebel for his incredible impact on our students, our campus, and our community! Lee S. Schwebel
