The Stahl Center connects UWM and greater Milwaukee through the field of Jewish Studies

CJS serves the UWM campus and the greater Milwaukee community by initiating and conducting academic and community events, as well as by promoting and fostering teaching and scholarship in a variety of disciplines engaged with Jewish Studies.

Pioneering Jewish social activist Lizzie Kander turned a recipe book she made for new immigrants in Milwaukee into the most successful charitable cookbook in American history. A new book examines the impact of “The Settlement Cook Book” for generations of women.

We're delighted to be cosponsoring this event at Boswell Book Company. Joel Greenberg will be sharing his latest book, TO LIFE: JEWS EXPLORING NATURE in which he explores the Jewish relationship with nature by illuminating significant Jewish thinkers who changed our understanding of the world around us.

Greenberg’s rich biographical sketches spotlight great Jewish scientists who not only made major contributions to the study of the natural world but also led rich and colorful lives: botanist and spy Aaron Aaronsohn, zoologist Libbie Henrietta Hyman, infamous ornithologist Nathan Leopold, mammalogist Philip Hershkovitz, arachnologist Herbert Levi, herpetologist H***n Marx, public health entomologist Andrew Spielman, and ecologist Joan Ehrenfeld. These individuals manifested different aspects of Jewish identity - some observant, some secular - but all were affected in one way or another by their being Jewish.
