The University of Minnesota Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery has more than 100 years of history of conducting research, treating patients, and educating the next generation of otolaryngologists. The department is home to more than 40 physicians providing the latest in patient care through the University of Minnesota Physicians – our clinical practice made up of more than 700 univer

sity doctors. Our physicians diagnose and treat a variety of ear, nose and throat problems – from the most common to the most complex. Because we’re a part of the University of Minnesota Medical School, our physicians regularly collaborate with colleagues in areas like pediatrics and oncology to provide the most advanced diagnostic and treatment options, as well as groundbreaking research opportunities. This commitment to collaboration and innovation, coupled with the expertise of our physicians, has allowed us to create a highly sought-after residency training program, attracting young physicians from around the nation and the world.

OFS 2026! 🎉🔬

Last week, we hosted 4 amazing medical students as a part of our Otolaryngology Future Scholars Program! Our scholars gained hands-on experience and learned about the world of ENT through clinical shadowing, departmental research, faculty lectures, simulations, and so much more! It was a fun week of connection, learning, and exploring the Twin Cities!

First ever Sub-I Otolaryngology Bootcamp!!! ✅

Last week our Department hosted our first ever Sub-I otolaryngology bootcamp, and it was a huge success! This bootcamp aims to prep medical students for their home and away bootcamps through hands-on experience in the multiple sub-specialities in otolaryngology. Students got to improve their skills in airway management, epistaxis and rigid scope, flexible scope, suturing, and so much more!

Over the weekend, our residents headed to Camp St. Croix for their annual resident retreat! They enjoyed bonfires, painting, yard games, and so much more. It was a wonderful weekend to connect, refresh, and unwind!

A standout showing from our Department, highlighted by a 1st place poster award 🥇 at the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology by Friederike Luetzenberg, MD, MBA, Valentina Montanez-Azcarate, MD, Sivakumar Chinnadurai, MD, MPH, Brianne Roby, MD, Abby Meyer, MD, MPH, Andrew Redmann, MD, and Asitha Jayawardena, MD, MPH. As well as a poster receiving an honorable mention by Elizabeth Dill, MD, Asitha Jayawardena, MD, MPH, and Autefeh Sajjadi, MD, MS.

Recently, Kolin Rubel, MD, presented at the 100th annual International Congress of Otorhinolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery Conference (ICORL 2026) in Goyang, South Korea. He shared novel insights on chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and led engaging discussions with colleagues from around the world!
