Hands-on learning is one of the hallmarks of a Gabelli School of Business education, and the new student-run Saxbys cafe at Fordham’s Lincoln Center campus offers students invaluable opportunities to gain firsthand experience in running a business. This busy retail operation is staffed and managed completely by Fordham students with a Gabelli School undergraduate at its helm.

The cafe’s inaugural student CEO, Aidan Engelmann, a senior majoring in global finance, was responsible for launching the business this past October, growing it to become one of the highest-performing Saxbys during its first semester of operation. In January, Borna ShayeiMousavi, a sophomore majoring in finance/pre-law, took the reins. He leads a team of 40-50 students, overseeing all aspects of finance, marketing, and operations, while earning course credit in the process. Under his leadership, the cafe continues to post impressive numbers.

Saxbys was a natural partner for Fordham in this student-led entrepreneurship initiative. The company’s patented Experiential Learning Platform and social impact-driven mission align with the Gabelli School’s emphasis on practical, hands-on approaches to business education and its focus on business with a purpose.

The Gabelli School's Consulting Cup Competition at Fordham’s Lincoln Center campus, was held on December 11, 2025. Three teams competed on the final evening of this semester-long Consulting Challenge Integrated Project, which mirrors what consultants do in real life—find innovative solutions for a company’s challenges in the marketplace and develop a comprehensive strategy that positions or repositions the brand for success. Competition is friendly but fierce! Students draw upon all of the knowledge—from marketing and accounting to IT and management—they have acquired, to deliver a formal presentation that will impress the panel of industry judges who decide which idea will best solve the issue a company is facing.

This year’s winning team included: Angelina Alias, Andres DeHerrera, Avi Gassman, Isaac Hsu, YiYin Mei, and Emily Owens, whose pitch was for McCormick & Company—the spice and extract manufacturer. Their presentation titled “Vanilla Vision: Domestic Climate Controlled Sustainable Greenhouse,” focused on building a more sustainable and domestic approach to the company’s vanilla manufacturing business.

The group was coached by Axel Roepnack, Ph.D., associate clinical professor of communications and media management at the Gabelli School of Business. Congrats to the winners; kudos to all of those who worked so hard on their pitches throughout the semester; and our deepest gratitude to the judges, coaches, and administrators who made this event possible.

This year’s Gabelli School Consulting Cup Competition at Fordham's Rose Hill campus, was held on December 10, 2025, and was the culmination of the sophomore year, semester-long Consulting Challenge Integrated Project. Six teams competed on the final evening, narrowed down from a much larger pool. All teams focused on identifying a company’s biggest problem in the marketplace, coming up with an innovative solution, and presenting a comprehensive proposal to a panel of industry judges and professors.

This year’s winning team included: Ashvin Das, Katie Hayes, Kyle Zinn, Matthew Medellin, and Sarah Dyer, whose pitch was titled: “Harley-Davidson x Coach: Partnership with Coach to develop motorcycle accessories." The group was guided by Clarence Ball III, advanced lecturer communications and media management at the Gabelli School. Their pitch amplified the tremendous value proposition of brands partnering to create new and unique business opportunities. Congrats to the winners; great job to all of those who worked so hard on their pitches throughout the semester; and a huge thanks to the judges, coaches, and administrators who made this event possible.

The Gabelli School's Personal and Professional Development Center (PPD) kicked off this season of giving thanks with the Gabelli Gratitude Lunch on November 3. During the event, students from the PPD Scholars programs took time out to write thank you notes to people who have helped them along their career journeys so far. Both Dean Lerzan Aksoy and Associate Dean Mark Silver dropped by.

The PPD Scholars programs provide select groups of high-performing undergraduate students with career coaching and unique networking opportunities with professionals from top companies. Participants benefit from résumé reviews, mock interviews, site visits, and small-group discussions with prominent Fordham alumni and industry leaders, gaining deep insights about career paths and trends in their fields of interest while making valuable professional network connections.

We would like to take this opportunity to send our thanks to the faculty, staff, alumni, and corporate partners who support our students’ career development and growth. Your efforts make a real difference in their lives, and we truly appreciate all that you do.
