When disasters overlap, strong community partnerships can make all the difference. 🏥🤝

New research co-authored by Daniel Sledge, Ph.D., of the OU Hudson College of Public Health, examines how nonprofits responded to overlapping crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic and Texas winter storm, and the COVID-19 Delta wave and Hurricane Ida.

The findings reveal that nonprofits can adapt to concurrent emergencies, strengthen disaster response and improve community health outcomes. Researchers also found that communities with greater nonprofit resources experienced better health outcomes after major disasters, highlighting the importance of strong nonprofit capacity and government partnerships.

Public health education just got a little more hands-on! 🙌

In September, Amber Freudenberger, Emily McDaniel, and Michael Clark from the OU Hudson College of Public Health’s Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology volunteered with the Sparrow Project in Moore, Oklahoma, bringing important lessons about preventing illness to life through interactive, engaging activities.

🦠 From using Glo Germ to uncover missed spots during handwashing to launching “sneeze balloons” and making slime to explore how mucus helps trap germs, the team showed that learning healthy habits can be both fun and memorable!
