Day one of our Summer Educators Institute was a great success! About 100 educators from schools and districts across the state are taking part in the three-day professional learning event, part of our Rural THRIVE project. Getting ready! Tomorrow we kick off our annual three-day Summer Educators Institute. Alysen Rieth is our 2026 Outstanding Master of Science in Athletic Training Student! Alysen did our accelerated MSAT program, which allows students to earn their bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and Physical Education and master’s in Athletic Training in just five years. However, she completed the program early after earning her bachelor’s degree in two years!!! In addition, Alysen was a pitcher on the Black Bears softball team, serving as a team captain her senior season. She's off to pursue a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at Loma Linda University. Congrats Alysen!

Victoria (Vicky) Tinghitella of Luján, Buenos Aires, Argentina is our 2026 Outstanding Graduate Student in Kinesiology and Physical Education! A graduate transfer student, Vicky played field hockey for the Maine Black Bears. "I chose UMaine because it allowed me to continue both my academic and athletic careers. I knew I wanted to pursue my master’s in Kinesiology and Physical Education, but it was also really important to me to play my final season of field hockey. UMaine allowed me to do both at a high level," she said. Vicky hopes to coach field hockey and be a positive role model for other athletes in the future. Congrats, Vicky!

Orlina Boteva is our 2026 Outstanding Graduate Student in Higher Education! As director of University of Maine International Programs, Orlina is a familiar face and longtime member of our community. Originally from Shumen, Bulgaria, she spent her junior year of undergrad as an exchange student at and returned to complete a Master of Arts in History and Master of Education in Student Development in Higher Education. Now she has graduated with her Ph.D. in education with a concentration in higher education with us!!! Orlina's dissertation was titled "Exploring Discourses About International Students in U.S. Undergraduate Admissions." Congrats, Orlina! Thank you for all that you do.

Amman Tariq is our 2026 Outstanding Graduate Student in Literacy, Language and Culture! Amman came to Maine as a Fulbright Foreign Language instructor with the Department of Modern Languages and Classics and starting taking classes in our college before applying to join our Ph.D. in education program with a concentration in literacy education. His dissertation was titled “Developing a TESOL Teacher Training Program for the Outer and External Circles: A Curriculum Design and Development Project.” He has also authored or co-authored multiple journal articles and other scholarly publications during his time with us. Amman will be staying in Maine for the time being while his wife finishes her Ph.D. Starting in the fall, he’ll be working as a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Maine at Augusta!!! Kudos Amman!

Laura Hatfield is our 2026 Outstanding Graduate Student in Special Education! Laura was an ed tech for 15 years in Regional School Unit 3, a rural school district in Maine, before deciding to take the leap and become a classroom special education teacher a couple of years ago. She enrolled in UMaine’s Master of Education (M.Ed.) program in special education (high-incidence disabilities concentration) to become officially certified as a special education teacher certification in Maine! Congrats, Laura! Thank you for all you do!

Ellie Silverio of Lincolnville, Maine just completed her first year in our Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) program. After leaving the state for her bachelor's degree, Ellie found her way back to Maine with the goal of becoming a certified athletic trainer. At the University of Maine, she has access to supportive professors and clinical supervisors, and a graduate program that provides the right mix of classroom instruction and hands-on training. After earning her MSAT, Ellie hopes to work with dancers and other performing artists, helping them prevent, treat and rehab their injuries.

Clare Stansberry is our 2026 Outstanding Graduate Student in Curriculum, Assessment and Instruction! Clare is a teacher at the Maine Coast Waldorf School, where she has taught since 2021. Prior to that she taught at a Waldorf school in Idaho. She earned her Master of Education (M.Ed.) with a concentration in High Leverage Practices to Support Inclusion. A self-described teaching nerd, who loves learning about how people make sense of the world, Clare says she chose UMaine because she knew others who had done UMaine programs and had positive experiences. She also wanted to do her grad program in the state where she lives. Kudos, Clare! Thanks for all you do.

Brianna (Bri) Harriman is our 2026 Outstanding Student in Outdoor Leadership! The OL concentration is part of our Kinesiology and Physical Education major. Bri was a seven-time recipient of both Dean’s List and UMaine Presidential Scholar honors. A member of the Black Bears track and field team, she was a two-time UMaine Scholar-Athlete, a two-time Presidential Scholar-Athlete and made the America East Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll three times. Bri worked as a peer mentor for fellow student athletes and at Maine Bound Adventure Center on campus during her time at UMaine. Kudos, Bri!
