JP Raite, EES student has been doingsome exciting work!

This past August, for the second year in a row, the incoming cohort of SFR MF students came out to JP's research plots in the Ducktrap River Preserve, owned by Coastal Mountains Land Trust, and helped JP measure trees. Four students suffered yellowjacket stings, but they persevered!

JP and Advisor Dr. William Livingston, and designed this to be a long-term monitoring project, that 1) examines forest health, including invasive plant and pest impacts, 2) serves as an excellent training venue for new Forestry students, and 3) provides the non-profit land trust with (free!) data to inform their stewardship decisions. This year, Aaron Bergdahl, the state Forest Pathologist, come out and talk to the group about beech leaf disease which was very educational.

Looking ahead, JP has applied for the competitive Fullbright Award to the University of Edinburgh's MSc in Ecology, Evolution, and Biodiversity and is eagerly anticipating the response come springtime!

Kate Busko is a fourth-year student majoring in Ecology & Environmental Sciences and Journalism. Her Honors thesis is entitled Tracing the Threads of Fiber Arts and Sustainability. This work intends to explore how working with fiber in any of its forms — weaving, crocheting, knitting, sewing, needlepoint etc. — encourages sustainable mindsets. This project was inspired by her own journey of diving into knitting and crocheting while studying environmental science. From this work, she intends to make a documentary, drawing on her journalism background to share these stories more widely.
