Philadelphia has always been home to incredible artists—and Paula Holloway is one we should know, celebrate, and support!

This Sunday, October 25, I’m so excited to welcome Paula Holloway back to Community Spotlight—“News That You Can Use!”

With her rich contralto voice and beautiful spirit, Paula brings heart to the music and joy to her audiences. You may know her as the lead singer of the Urban Guerilla Orchestra, through her singing at Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church, or from her performances with the Philly POPS Orchestra.

And she has so much more to share! We’ll catch up on:

Upcoming performances and Philly POPS gigs

Her new podcast

The play “The Shoeshine Box”

Her new music and the inspiration behind it

Join me, Sherri Pennington, for music, good vibrations, and a conversation with a truly beautiful soul.

Hey Family,
Do you understand how decisions made in Harrisburg affect your everyday life—and how your vote helps shape them?

Join me, Sherri Pennington, on Community Spotlight as I welcome Pennsylvania State Senator Vincent Hughes, representing the 7th Senatorial District, including parts of Philadelphia and Montgomery County.

First as a State Representative and now as a State Senator, Senator Hughes has worked to advance investments in education, affordable housing, healthcare, gun violence prevention, mental health, and voting rights.

We’ll discuss the progress made, the work still ahead, and how these issues connect to the choices voters make. We’ll also cover important voting deadlines and how to vote before Election Day at Philadelphia’s satellite election offices.

Join us on Sunday, October 18, at 11:30 AM
WKDU 91.7 FM Philadelphia

WHO GETS TO BE A HERO—AND WHO GETS TO TELL OUR STORIES?

An image can spark imagination, challenge a stereotype, or make us look at history differently.

This Sunday, October 4, join me, Sherri Pennington, on Community Spotlight for a conversation with talented Philadelphia illustrator, curator, and art director Eric Battle, whose work includes Spider-Man, the X-Men, and Batman.

Eric’s latest accomplishment is Illustrating Framing Emmett Till: Exposing Dark Fear, written by Christopher Benson—and the responsibility of bringing painful history to the pages. Eric completed 272 pages of amazing illustrations, which is amazing! His story is inspiring and intriguing.

We’ll go beyond the drawing board to explore:
• What it means to see ourselves reflected as heroes.
• His work as co-curator of The Black Hero’s Journey, opening October 15 at Penn Libraries.
• How our communities can encourage the next generation of artists and storytellers.
• And more!

Special thanks to my Community Spotlight guest, Philadelphia City Commissioner Seth Bluestein, for an engaging, informative conversation about the upcoming election. The House is currently separated by one Rep, and the Senate is close, too. Every vote will truly matter come November. Enough is enough! Do what you have to do, but VOTE.
