Twenty-five years after the September 11, 2001 attacks, the day remains etched in our collective memory as we remember the lives taken, the families and communities forever changed, and the countless acts of courage and compassion that followed.

Three Wharton alumni recently shared with Wharton Magazine their personal stories of turning immense tragedy and personal loss into a lifelong commitment to service:

Sean Egan (W’18): A founding member of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum's Visionary Network, Sean is working to add 9/11 to the curricula of schools around the country as a way to honor the life of his father, Martin J. Egan Jr., who lost his life on 9/11 while working as a captain for the Fire Department of New York.

Robert Hurst (WG’68): As a former Goldman Sachs vice chairman, Robert tapped into his vast network to create the 9/11 United Services Group, which brought together nonprofits, government agencies, and major financial firms to assist those affected by the attacks during the immediate aftermath.

Hilary Kramer (WG’91): A staunch advocate for 9/11 first responders, survivors, and their families, Hilary honors the legacy of her husband, Timothy Edward Coyne, a New York City police lieutenant who passed away in 2021 of health complications related to 9/11, by helping others through organizations like Survivors of the Shield and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

As we welcome our students back to campus for the fall semester, we’re also welcoming a new Vice Dean to the program in Michael Roberts.

Vice Dean Roberts has spent more than two decades at Wharton as a professor and researcher, focusing on corporate finance, banking, and investments and earning numerous teaching awards while helping shape generations of business leaders. In his new role, he’s bringing that same commitment to learning, innovation, and student success while shaping the future of our MBA program.

“I want to continue building on Wharton’s tradition of academic excellence,” he says. “Our rigorous, analytical approach has defined the School for generations, and I’ve seen firsthand the value that Wharton graduates bring to organizations around the world.”

🌎 This summer, the Wharton Global Youth Program welcomed more than 1,900 students from 63 countries to its residential programs in Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Cambridge, United Kingdom.

In classrooms and beyond, students asked big questions, tried new things, explored complex ideas, worked through real-world challenges, collaborated and made connections with peers, and learned from Wharton faculty, instructors, and industry leaders.

For Dr. Bruce I. Jacobs (G’79, GRW’86), Co-Founder and Co-CIO of Jacobs Levy Equity Management, it means equipping students with advanced training in quantitative methods, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and financial markets.

The announcement last fall of his transformational $60 million gift to establish Wharton’s first new degree in 50 years, the Dr. Bruce I. Jacobs Master of Science in Quantitative Finance, marks the next chapter in that progression.

About clusters: Every year, the incoming MBA class is grouped into clusters, each with its own support system, culture, community, and mascot. Clusters are then divided into cohorts and learning teams, all to help the 800+ students in a class connect more closely with one another.

🏎️ What can the motorsport industry teach us about competition and strategy?

That’s what students in our MBA Program for Executives sought to learn during a recent Block Week course in Italy’s famed Motor Valley: https://whr.tn/4yUNtCx

Led by Wharton Prof. Henning Piezunka and King's College London Prof. Paolo Aversa, the course brought students on site visits to legendary organizations such as Ducati, Visa Cash App RB, Lamborghini, Dallara, and Ferrari to examine how elite organizations build and sustain competitive advantage.

Among the week’s company visits, Dallara stood out most to Aksh*t (Ash) Bhatia, CFA (WG ’27), Director at Silicon Valley Bank, as he was struck by the company’s engineering heritage and the culture created by founder Gian Paolo Dallara, who still visits the company daily in his 90s.

“The focus wasn’t just on profits,” Aksh*t said. “It was on people, passion, and building excellence over generations.”

For F1 fan Fong Lin (WG’27), who works as a People Partner at Harvey, the course gave her a better understanding of what happens behind the scenes of elite performance.

“It made me think about how organizations define success,” she said. “When leaders clearly define what winning looks like, every part of the organization from hiring to performance management can align around that goal.”

Marat Shaimardanov, WG ’27, co-CEO of RG Gold in Kazakhstan, enrolled in the course hoping to better understand how elite racing teams coordinate engineering, operations, and teamwork under intense pressure.

“The professors gave us the research and frameworks first,” he said. “Then we went into world-class companies to see those ideas in practice and discussed what we observed with classmates from completely different industries. It created a level of learning that would be very difficult to replicate anywhere else.”
