Drexel University's Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design is dedicated to the experiential education of students in the areas of design, media, entertainment, industry and the performing and visual arts. Westphal offers 16 undergraduate majors, 28 undergraduate minors and six graduate programs housed in award-winning, technologically-enhanced facilities including, four performing and screening theaters, film and music studios, an art gallery, notable collections of 30,000 historic costumes and Sigma Sound Studio recordings, a record label, and a Hollywood-level motion capture studio. Drexel’s renowned cooperative education program (Co-op) incorporates six months of professional experience into the curriculum for all undergraduate students. At both the undergraduate and graduate levels, Westphal values an experiential and hands-on studio approach to classes taught by industry-leading faculty. Our students produce sophisticated work through creative, interdisciplinary practice which provides meaningful, shared experiences that promote individual and communal growth. Eleven of Westphal’s programs enjoy national rankings, and Drexel is a U.S. News and World Report Top 100 University, located in the heart of Philadelphia, PA.

A tribute to the life and work of our own Professor Langdon now hangs in the halls of Main Building, presented by Drexel’s Founding Collection. John Langdon, a longtime adjunct professor in Westphal’s Graphic Design, passed away earlier this year. His extraordinary career saw the creation of numerous works of art, specializing in unique presentations of lettering and type. The author of Wordplay (1992), he was instrumental in the development of ambigrams - in this case, words or glyphs that remain identical when inverted.

Langdon’s ambigrams were part of the inspiration for Dan Brown’s 1998 novel “Angels & Demons,” and were used in the promotion of the film adaptation. The protagonist of Brown’s bestselling novels didn’t get the name “Robert Langdon” by accident.

Stop by the Rincliffe Gallery to explore a multitude of Langdon’s ambigrams and other mindbending works of art. Exhibition design is by current Graphic Design student Emma Yashinsky (’27), in partnership with professor Mark Stockton and the Pearlstein Gallery.

Black Bottom Voices at the Semiquincentennial is a free, hybrid event on October 16th, involving students and community stakeholders on Drexel and Penn campuses, connected by a video link. Both universities stand in the Black Bottom. The event features Walter Palmer, JD, leading conversations with Black Bottom elders, who will share memories and evaluate 3D digital models of the Market Street corridor circa 1950, displayed on a 10’×20′ LED wall on the Drexel campus. Dr. Edward Epstein, speaking with the live audience in Stiteler Hall Auditorium will situate the Black Bottom’s destruction within a national pattern of mid-20th century urban renewal programs that targeted minority communities across the country. Through the video link, participants in Stiteler Hall will see the 3D models and interact with the Black Bottom elders.

In the season one finale of Iterations: Creative Research in Motion, we look at two parallel approaches to multimedia climate storytelling at Drexel. Ben Kalina, an award-winning documentary filmmaker, uses film to translate overwhelming science into local, meaningful stories of impact. James McKinney, Grammy-nominated musician and producer, experiments with immersive audio, virtual reality, and music production to make climate data more accessible.
