TALK TO YOUR MANAGER ABOUT I-5 CONSTRUCTION

I-5 construction will start this Friday, September 11th and is scheduled to last for a month.

How will this impact PCC workers?

The city predicts travel delays for folks who use I-5 or nearby roadways. Impacted members are worried about long commute times, intercampus travel, and discipline for lateness.

WHAT LAST-MINUTE STEPS CAN YOU TAKE TO PREPARE?

- Research how this construction will impact your travel to work.
- If one has not already occurred, request a team meeting or a one-on-one check-in with your manager.
- In writing, request adjustments to your location or schedule.
- If applicable, ask about formal accommodation.
- Create a communication plan with your manager in case you experience unanticipated delays and need to notify them of your late arrival.

What if your manager isn’t flexible or collaborative?

- If your manager is not open to having planning conversations, isn’t being flexible, or is holding you to a different standard than your coworkers, reach out to [email protected].
- Our union has already notified HR/PSEC that we’ll reach out if Classified workers report inadequate support from managers.

WORKDAY GRIEVANCES & LAWSUIT @ PCC

Our union, FCE, has two active grievances over contract violations, including payroll issues, caused by the negligent and messy Workday rollout last year. For more information, or to add to these grievances, contact: [email protected]. Per our contract, we are currently scheduling time to discuss these grievances with Dr. Croom.

A class action lawsuit was filed against PCC about Workday. This was filed by the law firm Albies & Stark, the same firm who won a lawsuit regarding a Workday payroll rollout on behalf of State of Oregon employees. PCC has agreed to mediation to try to settle the lawsuit. There are mediation sessions scheduled on October 27th and November 17th.

A class action lawsuit means that it has the potential to cover all impacted workers. If the lawsuit settles or wins, you may be entitled to compensation. While FCE is not formally part of this lawsuit, our officers have met with the attorneys and shared details regarding the Workday rollout that support their case. The Contract Action Team (CAT)

Ensures bargaining is led by members. The CAT engages FCE members, helps build our bargaining platform with feedback from members, builds relationships, shares bargaining updates, encourages participation, and builds solidarity around our bargaining priorities and contract campaign.

The Bargaining Team (BAT)

Represents classified workers during contract negotiations with the College. Bargaining Team members help develop proposals based on member feedback, review and respond to College proposals, and negotiate with the support and guidance of our membership. The Team collaborates with our Contract Action Team (CAT) to determine member priorities and develop a bargaining and organizing escalation strategy.

Time Commitment

Both teams require a consistent time commitment, but we do understand that personal health and responsibilities may sometimes require us to take a break.

Union members have the right to use "union release time" (URT) for bargaining work, which means we can complete some bargaining tasks during our usual work hours.

What are we looking for? No bargaining experience necessary! We'll offer training. Both teams need a diverse group of folks with a variety of skills and experience, including:

- Communication (written, visual, verbal)
- Research
- Conflict resolution
- Budget and data interpretation
- Relationship-building and workplace organizing
- Policy, contract, grievance, or compliance interest
- Strategy and big picture ideas
- Event planning

A LABOR DAY MESSAGE FROM OUR UNION’S VP OF MEMBERSHIP, DANNY RYEL

Why is Labor Day a time to celebrate together as a union? We are not only celebrating what we have earned together in solidarity, but also honoring the sacrifices made by our forebearers for things we today take for granted. You have surely heard time and again the efforts that went into the 40 hour work week and lunch breaks... But it is largely acknowledged that labor uprisings like the Haymarket Massacre and the Homestead Strike shifted public and political favor into recognizing Labor as a significant part of the culture within the U.S. - Oregon was even the first state in the union to officially recognize it as a holiday, after years of timber, bricklayer and shipping unions (among others) fighting hard to gain a foothold in Oregon’s political theaters.

For me, growing up in Oregon, Labor Day tended to always include a weekend of camping at Diamond Lake or barbecues in the park. But as I got older, and as my papa worked his way up in the Federation of Federal Employees local, I came to understand its significance more. I learned about the connections (good and bad) between labor in the U.S. and our immigrant and/or displaced populations; the lengths to which corporate interests went to defame and destroy people and unions; and the erosion of social safety nets and public goods, placing more stress on working people and their families.

This Labor Day, I hope that you are able to use the recognized holiday to gather with friends and loved ones, to rest and restore, and to celebrate the efforts of you and your colleagues to overcome a vicious bargaining cycle. But I also hope that you take time to look a little deeper into the history of our nation and labor, see the patterns that are repeating, and prepare for defending not only your interests in our workplace, but the recognition of Labor as an integral part of the United States’ culture, even (or especially) today.

OUR UNION’S DELEGATE SPEAKS UP AT THE AFT NATIONAL CONVENTION

Aurora Newkirk wrote about her experience speaking at the 2026 AFT National Convention in Washington, DC July 15-19. She said she went:

“to a mic on the floor, in front of all 2,500 delegates, alternates, and other attendees, with a question of privilege to criticize how the resolutions were being handled. To summarize my speech:

“- I found it disrespectful that the chair was only allowing one speaker per resolution, and that the chair (the current AFT National President) was the one calling to end debate rather than the members of the body.
- We all traveled here to represent our members, spending our union’s money, and we deserve more time to speak, choose when to end debate, and vote properly.
- It’s not democratic to have all these votes happen at the end of general sessions or the entire convention, when people have other events or planes to catch, and it gives the resolution votes the feeling of being a rubber-stamp.
- AFT National invited thousands of people to be there, and it’s not okay for them to then say that’s too many people to allow for debate.
- I hope the next AFT National Convention will schedule much more time for resolutions.

“That speech was possibly the most impulsive thing I’ve ever done. The Retirees of AFT-Oregon, in their daily recap, said that my speech was received with “loud cheers,” but I was so nervous and spending all my energy trying to get through my speech that I honestly didn’t hear most of it.”

No more corporate CEOs for PCC President!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR UNION’S VP OF POLITICAL ACTION, CASSIDY CURRA IN SOLIDARITY WITH OUR SIBLING UNION, FFAP

The PCC Board is searching for our next president. On Thursday, August 27th Board member Dan Saltzman sent an email to invite us all to attend the upcoming special board meeting on Monday, August 31st.

The Board has claimed that they “want” our voices, but before they even asked, they’d already created a list of internal and external stakeholders they wanted to speak to. There were very few classified, APs and faculty on this internal list, and only one student. The external list is even worse, and it’s clear that the Board is still looking for corporate CEOs despite our demands.

We have two requests: please virtually attend the next PCC Board special session on Monday at 5pm and sign this petition about what YOU want from our next college president.

BOARD WATCH (3 of 3): STUDENT & FFAP SOLIDARITY

Classified employees who are curious to see what other folks said to the Board should check out the public comments and FFAP’s President Report.

PCC gerontology graduate Shawntá Creech spoke in opposition to program closures. “After 469 days, I’m tired. But I am anchored to more than a mustard seed of faith. And I will be fighting until you do what’s right.”

BOARD WATCH (2 of 3): A PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH “ROOTED IN OUR COMMUNITY”

Dr Croom’s presentation on August 20th included an interesting “snapshot” of PCC’s workers. But it was PCC’s union leaders who brought these workers into the room for the Board members.

Aenghus and Cassidy Curra, FCE VP of Political Action, both referenced a special session where a list of stakeholders in the presidential search process was litigated. Aenghus said: “Of the 53 people on this list, a large majority are management, five are Classified workers, and only one is a student.”

Cassidy expressed dismay about Board members stated concerns that more external stakeholders needed to be represented on the list and the previous process involved too much input from those within the college. She shared news about the Petition: Recruitment for PCC President and said “We want someone rooted in our community.”
