¿Una persona con implante coclear se convierte en persona oyente?

No necesariamente. Una persona con implante coclear no “se convierte” automáticamente en persona oyente en el sentido tradicional, aunque sí puede acceder al sonido y desarrollar habilidades auditivas.

🔎 ¿Qué hace realmente?

El implante coclear:

No restaura la audición natural.

No amplifica el sonido como un auxiliar auditivo.

Convierte el sonido en impulsos eléctricos que estimulan directamente el nervio auditivo.

El cerebro aprende a interpretar esas señales como sonido.

🎧 Entonces… ¿es oyente o no?

Depende de cómo lo mires:

✔ Desde el punto de vista funcional:

Puede escuchar sonidos del ambiente.

Puede desarrollar lenguaje oral.

Puede comunicarse auditivamente. ➡ En ese sentido, sí tiene acceso al mundo sonoro.

✔ Desde el punto de vista médico:

Sigue teniendo una pérdida auditiva severa o profunda.

Necesita el dispositivo para escuchar. ➡ Técnicamente, no deja de tener discapacidad auditiva.

✔ Desde el punto de vista identitario:

Algunas personas implantadas se identifican como oyentes.

Otras se identifican como personas sordas.

Otras como parte de ambas comunidades.

💡 Lo más importante

El implante no cambia quién es la persona, sino que le brinda una herramienta para comunicarse y participar en diferentes entornos.

No convierte a alguien en “más” o “menos” que antes. Simplemente abre una vía adicional de acceso al sonido.
