Bachelor's Degree:
A Bachelor of Arts degree seeks to provide students with a broad-based understanding of the processes

of human communication and the importance of these communication processes in our society, while serving and encouraging those students with professional aspirations to become ethical, articulate, creative and innovative leaders in the field of communication. Students major in Communication as preparation for careers in business, law, teaching, and the ministry, among others. Communication is the only way to exercise leadership, and oral communication is our main method for communicating with one another. Thus, the communication studies major proves useful to students with a wide array of career aspirations.

Master's Degree:
The MA degree in Communication is designed to prepare students to use relational, organizational, rhetorical, and media theory and research in order to pursue career goals including advanced work at the doctoral level, careers in academia, and careers in consulting, business, and the media industry. Graduate education in the Department of Communication socializes students into two crucial forms of knowing. This approach essentially aims to describe the characteristics of various forms of spoken messages. Rhetorical criticism and theory, analysis of argumentation, the production of film and video artifacts, film theory, and the aesthetics of film and video all fall under the rubric of the qualitative approach. The second approach of studying and researching human communication is grounded firmly in empirical methodologies involving such activities as experimental design, statistical analysis, studies of interpersonal, organizational, and small group communication, and the process and effects of mass communication. These two crucial forms of knowing will provide students with the opportunity to study several overlapping concentrations within the graduate program.

We are thankful to welcome a new adjunct instructor to our faculty, Professor Crosby Cobb Ramirez!

Professor Ramirez holds a B.A. in Communication from Baylor University, and an M.S. in Family Communication from Texas Christian University. Her research interests center on how families navigate matters of identity and the discussion of taboo topics.

Professor Ramirez is teaching two online sections of CSS 4313/Family Communication this Fall, and we are grateful for her expertise and support in meeting this semester’s instructional needs.

When Professor Ramirez isn’t teaching, she loves to cook and travel with her husband. She also teaches yoga classes.

We are happy to have this familiar face back in our midst, and thankful for all Professor Ramirez is bringing to our students and department this semester!
