📚✨ We’re excited to share the publication of Supernatural Japan: Izumi Kyoka and the Global Fantastic, a new book by Pedro Bassoe, Assistant Professor of Japanese, Comparative Literature, and Asian Studies. The book explores how Kyoka’s ghost stories and fantastical tales blend traditional Japanese folklore with influences from European and global literature, helping establish the “fantastic” as a modern literary genre in Japan. 👏

Congratulations to Pedro on this exciting contribution to literary and cultural studies!

On Sunday, April 19, our Portuguese 302/Minors class took a trip to Fernando’s, a Brazilian restaurant in downtown Indianapolis 🇧🇷✨ We enjoyed authentic Brazilian food and then headed to an arcade for duckpin bowling and pinball. 🎳🎮

It was a fun way to experience Brazilian culture, food, and community together!

Gōngxǐ!! Five Chinese majors/minors were inducted into the Chinese Language Teachers Associate (CLTA) National Collegiate Chinese Honors Society. Honored were Connor Barnsley, Hannah Marlowe, Ian Murray, Edward Robison, and Ashley Young. A video of their poetry recitation will be presented at the annual conference of CLTA with translation. The translation of their poem:

Farewell to Purdue
Gently, I left,
Just like I came gently;
I gently waved my hands,
To bid farewell to the clouds in the western sky.
The warm brass hue
belongs to the Bell Tower at sunset;
The four tones of Chinese
echo at the side of my ears.
Quietly, I left,
Just like I quietly came;
I waved my sleeves,
Without taking away a puff of cloud.

SLC wishes the best future to these hardworking students!
