Our very own director, Dr. Brad Maguth, was invited to Kobe, Japan, to present at the 2026 International Social Studies Association Annual Meeting.

His presentation, “Economic Literacy Beyond Borders: Economic Education & the Civic Mission of Social Studies,” explored why economic education is essential to preparing informed, engaged citizens.

At the H. Kenneth Barker Center for Economic Education at The University of Akron, we believe economics is about more than money. It’s about helping students understand the economic forces shaping their lives, critically evaluate decisions and policies, and participate meaningfully in their communities and the broader world.

Dr. Maguth’s international presentation reflects our commitment to facilitate conversations on the value of economics and how we prepare the next generation of citizens.

A big thank you to all the educators and community members who joined us tonight for an engaging panel discussion focused on teaching free enterprise and financial education! 👏📚💰

We enjoyed a wonderful evening of conversation, the sharing of valuable classroom resources, and the exchange of ideas about how we can better prepare students to understand free enterprise, make informed financial decisions, and navigate an increasingly complex economic world.
