Research doesn't always happen in a lab.🐦

Recently, Dr. Kenny Zhu and his REU students spent a day at a local farm and forest identifying bird species using the Merlin Bird ID app and learning firsthand about the rich biodiversity present in a relatively small area.

This experience highlights the real world connections to Dr. Zhu's research in animal language processing. His research explores how AI and machine learning can help analyze and better understand animal communication. By observing birds in their natural environment, students gained valuable insight into the kinds of data that can inspire and support this emerging field of research.

We talk a lot about AI’s massive electricity demand, but what about its thirst? 💧🤖

As artificial intelligence scales globally, its massive power requirements get a lot of headlines, but its hidden, escalating water footprint is becoming a critical environmental bottleneck. A newly published paper in the Communications of the ACM uncovers this exact challenge.

Co-authored by UTA Computer Science and Engineering Assistant Professor Mohammad Islam, the research dives deep into the secret water footprint of AI models and details how the tech industry can pivot toward sustainability.

Titled "Making AI Less 'Thirsty': Uncovering and Addressing the Secret Water Footprint of AI Models," this work provides a clear methodology to measure, track, and ultimately mitigate the heavy environmental stress AI centers place on local water infrastructure.

What if devices could connect to fast 5G networks without draining their batteries? 🔋

Yoon Chae, an assistant professor of computer science and engineering at UTA, has co-authored wireless research accepted into the upcoming ACM MobiSys 2026 conference.

The paper introduces a 5G backscatter communication system that allows smart devices to send wide-bandwidth data by reflecting existing 5G signals instead of generating their own wireless transmissions. While wider bandwidth can support higher data rates, it also makes signal recovery complex and less tolerant of wireless interference and timing errors. To address these challenges, the team developed a dual-task transformer model that simultaneously learns wireless channel conditions and decodes backscatter signals, making the system faster and more reliable.

Chae collaborated on the study with lead author ZhenZhe Lin, Mingyo Jeong and Parth Pathak of George Mason University, and Panneer Selvam Santhalingam of Brooklyn College. The research was highly selective, earning acceptance into the premier mobile systems conference with a competitive 22.5% acceptance rate.

How can smart devices pool data together to spot trends without compromising personal information? 🔏

Remi Chou, an assistant professor of computer science and engineering at UTA, along with co-authors Joerg Kliewer of the New Jersey Institute of Technology and Aylin Yener of The Ohio State University, has published research that addresses this challenge. Their paper, "Private Sum Computation: Trade-Offs between Communication, Randomness, and Privacy," explains how users and devices can combine data while keeping each person’s information private.

This collaborative work gives engineers a blueprint to build applications and systems that keep individual data secure while allowing devices to work together faster and more efficiently.

Sherri has been an amazing part of our department, serving as a central pillar of support for the entire CSE community. Throughout her 25 years at UTA, she has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help faculty navigate administrative needs, guide countless students through their academic journeys, and support staff with her warmth and expertise. As the assistant to the chair, her dedication, organizational mastery and kind spirit have kept the department running smoothly and made our workspace feel like a community.
