Please join us in celebrating Afia Anjum on earning her Ph.D. from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at The University of Texas at Arlington.

Afia’s journey reflects years of dedication, perseverance, and passion for research. Her dissertation focused on securing communication in cyber-physical systems and improving their reliability, advancing research in safety-critical infrastructure and secure systems. During her Ph.D. journey, she interned with Los Alamos National Laboratory in Summer 2024 and later joined their team as a graduate researcher, contributing to projects focused on securing safety-critical communication infrastructure. She was also awarded the LANL Tuition Assistance Award through a Department of Energy-funded project supporting her doctoral studies.

This summer, Afia will continue her research journey as a postdoctoral researcher at LANL before beginning an exciting new chapter as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Texas Christian University.

We are proud to celebrate Afia’s accomplishments and look forward to the impact she will continue to make in research, education, and cybersecurity.

Ever wondered if we could decode what animals are actually saying? 🐕

The ACL Lab officially kicked off the 2026 Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) site program on animal language processing and understanding. This NSF initiative gives undergraduate students the opportunity to participate in active, hands on research alongside university faculty. Out of 134 applications from across the United States, 10 students and one volunteer from seven different states were selected to join the research team this summer. Participants are joining us from some of the nation's top institutions, including Cornell University, the University of Washington, The University of Maryland College Park, and The University of Texas at Austin, a testament to the reputation and appeal of our REU program.

Led by Kenny Zhu, the lab focuses on pioneering data driven research into how animals communicate. This summer, the cohort will dive into computational linguistics projects, exploring areas like tracking canine communication patterns and analyzing avian vocal structures to help decode the natural world without relying on human prior knowledge.

The program began with an opening ceremony on Monday featuring department chair Hong Jiang as the special guest speaker.

We are excited to celebrate UTA CSE alumnus Raghava Vemuri, who earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science. Since graduating in 2022 he has spent the past three years building his career as a Full Stack Software Engineer at Schlumberger. His journey from student to industry professional reflects the dedication, growth, and persistence that continues to define our Maverick alumni community.

Reflecting on his experience, Raghava shared: “Amidst all the chaos, the layoffs and uncertainty, there is always opportunity. Never must the fear of rejection and failure dictate your career path. There will always be a market for software engineering. However, you must keep updating your skill stack.”

Stories like Raghava’s reflect the resilience, adaptability, and ambition of our Maverick community. We are excited to see all that he accomplishes in the years ahead.

We are thrilled to announce that Assistant Professor Miao Yin has officially become our fourth faculty member this year to receive an NSF CAREER award.

Scientific research like climate modeling and space exploration creates massive amounts of data that can be nearly impossible to store or move around quickly. Dr. Yin is working to solve this problem by rethinking how we compress that data. By combining artificial intelligence with specialized computer hardware, this project will make it much faster and easier for scientists to handle huge datasets without losing the quality they need for their discoveries.

This five year project is a major win for the future of high performance computing and reinforces the incredible research momentum we have built in our department.

🥼Connecting the world of digital fabrication with material science.
Assistant Professor Cesar Torres has earned a $550,000 NSF CAREER Award for his project, "Towards Interactive Sensor-Driven Tools for Exploring, Replicating, and Sharing Material Recipes." Dr. Torres is developing a low-cost sensing and data platform to characterize viscous materials like pastes, gels, and inks. By combining pressure-based sensing with computational analysis, his research models how these materials behave during mixing, setting, and curing.
The project includes interactive tools that link measurements to online recipe repositories, allowing makers to annotate and replicate complex material processes with precision. These tools will be integrated into university coursework and maker environments to support training at the intersection of human-computer interaction and digital fabrication.
