What makes the UD Rome experience feel like home?

For generations of students, part of the answer is Nino and Nuccia, the Adopted Grandparents of the Rome campus.

For 15 years, the couple behind the Due Santi cafeteria have welcomed students with warm meals, caring advice and the kind of hospitality that turns strangers into family. Known affectionately as the Rome Campus's nonni adottivi — adopted grandparents — they have helped countless students feel at home while studying abroad.

As another summer unfolds in Rome, we're celebrating two of the people who make the Rome experience so memorable.

The Keeper of Due Santi

For 30 years, Fabio Cinalli has been the steady, quiet presence behind the University of Dallas Rome Campus.

From the very first semester at Due Santi in 1994 to this summer’s Rome programs, Fabio has helped keep the campus beautiful, welcoming and ready for generations of students, faculty and visitors.

“Insieme a questo campus, sicuramente,” Fabio said — “Together with this campus, certainly.”

A longtime professor, alumnus and most recently dean of students, Roper brings decades of experience as a scholar, educator and academic leader to the role.

During the Rome Program, student athlete Walker Alsobrooks '27 felt drawn to the beauty of the Catholic Church — not just in the sights and experiences of Rome, but also in the joy of the seminarians he met.

This Easter, Alsobrooks was initiated into the Church.

"I've been looking forward to this day for a long time, and it's been a long time coming … I do not deserve that love, but he gave it to me," he said. "I feel so blessed."

Most know John Adams. Few know the woman behind him.

University of Dallas history professor Dr. Susan Hanssen was personally invited by the White House's Salute to America 250 Task Force to share the story of Abigail Adams in "The Story of America," a video series produced by Hillsdale College in partnership with the White House's Salute to America 250 Task Force to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

In this episode, Dr. Hanssen shares the story of Abigail Adams, one of the most influential yet often overlooked figures of the American Founding. Through her expertise, we learn about Abigail's faith, her grief, her steadfast support of John Adams and how her counsel helped shape the founding of our nation.

Dr. Hanssen's passion for this topic runs deep. She regularly teaches John and Abigail Adams' letters in her course "Women in American History" at UDallas and has published extensively on the subject. Read her work below:
