Great summer teaching opportunity for students of Italian! We have had MANY University of Dallas students take advantage of this program over the past few years.

What is it?

"Insieme" is a network of English-speaking camps for Italian children. It is run by an Italian Catholic Association in Milan. The organizers are looking for English-speaking students to teach at the camps. In particular they are looking for camp-counselors from a Catholic-Christian background, who acknowledge the worth and dignity of each individual, have a meaningful purpose in life, have an attitude to live a life of service, and work with humility and are open to learning from each other.

They offer paid internship opportunities at our camps in Education, Sports, ESL, Art, and Theatre/Music Education.

Student camp-counselors live with Italian host families who provide meals. They are paid a weekly stipend. It is an excellent opportunity to teach English and to hone one's Italian language skills.

Weekends are free to explore the cities/town in which one is living and beyond.

The ideal candidate will:
• be a minimum of 20-years-old
• be responsible and mature
• be experienced in managing a group of children
• be self-confident
• have demonstrated leadership ability
• have a cheerful disposition
• want to make a difference in the lives of children

Do you follow racing? Did you know that the current Formula 1 leader is a 20-year-old Italian? Last year Kimi Antonelli took his “maturità” (high school exit-exams), this year he can wrap up the F1 championship…in Texas!

That’s right, the Italian driver can become the youngest world gran prix champion in history right here in Texas, at tomorrow’s United States Gran Prix in Austin. Catch the race starting at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Save the date! Our keynote speaker for the upcoming symposium "San Francesco's Transitus at 800 (1226-2026): "The most saintly among the Italians, the most Italian among the saints" will be none other than Fr. Augustine Thompson, O.P. Fr. Thompson is an internationally renowned author and currently the Praeses of the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies at the University of Toronto.

His address on "Francis of Assisi: The Man Behind 800 Years of Legends" will take place Saturday, November 7 at 2 p.m. in the Catholic Foundation Boardroom (Cardinal Farrell Hall 219).

Very Rev. Augustine Thompson, O.P. is a Catholic priest of the Order of Preachers. Father Thompson has had a distinguished academic career holding senior teaching positions at the University of Oregon and the University of Virginia (Charlottesville), as well as the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in Berkeley, California. A well-published medieval historian, his many books and articles include most notably Francis of Assisi: A New Biography (Cornell University Press, 2012) and Cities of God: The Religion of the Italian Communes, 1125–1325 (Pennsylvania State University Press, 2005), as well as Dominican Brothers: Conversi, Lay, and Cooperator Friars (New Priory Press, 2017).

2026 marks the 800th anniversary of San Francesco’s Transitus, his earthly death, and the culmination of 18 months of official celebrations, which will also see the return of his feast day as an officially recognized federal holiday in Italy. Our symposium “San Francesco’s Transitus at 800 (1226-2026): ‘The most saintly among the Italians, the most Italian among the saints’” joins numerous other manifestations in Italy and around the world in recognition of the saint and aims to explore San Francesco’s specific contributions to Italian culture, language, literature, history, politics, architecture, and theology.

We are proud to support all of those in North Texas who want to spread "italianità" ("Italian-ness"). To that end, we are excited for the Dallas Museum of Art and its magnificent upcoming exhibition "Journey Through Pompeii: Masterpieces from the National Archaeological Museum of Naples."

The exhibition will run from December 13, 2016 to May 2, 2027 in the DMA's Chilton I Gallery. Tickets are free for DMA members and $20 on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday; $25 on Saturday and Sunday for the public.

"Journey Through Pompeii: Masterpieces from the National Archaeological Museum of Naples" brings the story of the ancient Roman city to life through over 160 works preserved in startling detail by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Featuring treasures from the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN), this landmark exhibition reveals the artistic, cultural, and everyday life of ancient Pompeii and cities and towns across the Bay of Naples. Discover frescoes featuring captivating mythological narratives and imaginative architectural designs, intricate floor mosaics and sculptures, finely crafted household furnishings, luxury items, and intimate domestic artifacts, preserved for nearly 2,000 years. This unique material record invites visitors to have an encounter with a vibrant society just before its sudden destruction.

Do you like poetry? How about poetry in the modern languages?

Join us tonight from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in SB Hall Multipurpose for the Seventh Annual Multilingual Poetry Night, sponsored by the University of Dallas Spanish Club, the Department of Modern Languages, and the French, German, and Italian Clubs.

Students and faculty can read poems in their original languages, translations, and original submissions.
