The School of Fashion is pleased to recognize Jordan James' garment "To Be a Man," which represented Kent State University at the Solstiss Academy 2026 Award Soiree in New York City!

This award ceremony, celebrating the next generation of American fashion design, featured world-renowned American fashion designer Vera Wang, who presented the final award. Sponsored by Solstiss USA, the Solstiss Academy was established in the 2023-2024 academic year to introduce fashion students at leading U.S. universities to the history, craftsmanship and creative possibilities of French lace. Kent State was among the 10 participating universities this year, continuing a longstanding relationship with Solstiss through the university’s NYC Fashion program.

Meet Lisa Smedley-Calderon, costume designer and Art Without Limits speaker for fashion!

Lisa Smedley-Calderon's work spans across fashion, music and film. Her early work consisted of styling music artists and involved multiple collaborations with performers, directors, producers and record label teams. She later transitioned into costume designing for film and television, including a film recognized on the Academy Awards shortlist.

Smedley-Calderon maintains active involvement in industry and community organizations, including the Costume Designers Guild, the Black Design Collective, the International Society of Black Costume Designers, ForbesBLK and The 100 Healthy Women community. Smedley-Calderon’s work reflects an ongoing commitment to collaboration, mentorship, and the role of design in shaping narrative and performance across media.

🤖👗$3,500+ in awards. One weekend to rethink what robots wear.

The Humanoid Robot Fashion Challenge is almost here, and our teams won’t just be designing for the runway, they’ll be competing for awards recognizing some of the most creative, innovative, and unexpected approaches to humanoid robot fashion. And for selected teams, the opportunity could extend far beyond Kent State: winning designs may be chosen to appear in a Robot Fashion Show during New York Fashion Week in February 2027. 🗽✨

Registration for the Challenge is currently FULL, but you can still join the waitlist, and everyone is invited to see what our teams create at the Sunday Showcase + Awards Presentation!

Anne (Catherine) Johnson is the owner and founder of Anne Cate, a Made-in-America accessories brand and manufacturing firm specializing in skyline silhouette purses and pillows. A proud Kent State graduate, Johnson has grown her business from a single sewing machine in her college dorm room into a full-scale manufacturing studio, employing full-time staff and empowering others to build success with their hands.
