Earlier this month, 9 medical students had the opportunity to present their research on topics in orthopedic surgery to faculty, residents, and other medical students. This was a great opportunity for them to show their hard work and connect with members of the department. We are impressed by the students’ dedication to research and their engagement with the department, and we can’t wait to see what they do next.

Highlights from a recent casting and splinting session for our PGY1s at Gillette! Our residents are engaged with the Gillette team and are developing their skills for the operating room with hands-on learning.

Our PGY1s participated in a skills day at Regions! The interns attended a lecture by new trauma faculty member Tyler Moon, MD, about intramedullary nailing before a sawbones lab, and got to apply their knowledge by practicing pelvic sheet application. These hands-on learning opportunities allow our interns to deepen their understanding of orthopedics alongside faculty.

We were honored to welcome visiting professor Julie Samora, MD, for an engaging grand rounds presentation titled “Confidence, Imposter Syndrome, and Perfectionism in Surgery.” During her visit, she spent some time at Gillette, where our residents and medical students had the valuable opportunity to present cases.

Congratulations to University of Minnesota medical students Madeline Wethington and Fatuma Adan on presenting their research at ICSES 2026 in Vancouver, hosted by the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES)!

Their project examined proximal humerus fracture fixation in patients with prior bariatric surgery, mentored by Allison Rao, MD, and Dr. Alicia Harrison, MD.

Boyd, Smith, Jewison, and Macalena) were on the sidelines at the Minnesota vs. Washington football game this Saturday, providing top-notch care and support. Huge congrats to our Minnesota Golden Gophers on their thrilling 27-24 victory!
